Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 23 May 2015

I cannot understand how anyone could possibly give this incredible place a rating less than the full five stars. We would give it six stars if possible. Sisters Chiara and Federica work hard with an excellent staff (esp. the man and woman who do the breakfast and also room cleaning) to provide seamless excellence as they bridge the joining of ancient abbey with modern hotel. The rarefied setting by Mt. Solemn provides a truly world-class vista and Marta will do the most excellent massage. Ezio can be called to do some taxi transfers as well. Mussolini stayed in rm. 215 in 1942, while touring his war machinery in Terni. The famed abbey itself is of course part of the magic here, as are numerous hikes of varying difficulty(try the easy Umbriano hike--thx Joe and Terri). There is a quaint litlle bar, a billiard room plus breakfasts that bow to no-one. Eating the latter outside at a cloister table as swallows twitter about must rank as a peak breakfast experience. Room rates are very reasonable. Just outstanding--it was wrenching to leave. I am done. The end.

The location is stunning, the building and grounds simply beautiful. The rooms are basic but perfectly functional and clean. There is a tiny bar that serves drinks and snacks, and the breakfast is good. There is an excellent restaurant on site called Hora Media (which I have reviewed separately) which is run independently of the hotel and saves you having to think about driving because you really are in the middle of nowhere! My only criticism is that the bedroom walls are extremely thin - when you check in, ask for a room with no neighbours because I could hear the man in the next room snoring - it was so loud he may as well have been in bed with us!

Room Tip: Make sure there is no-one in the room next to you - what should have been a very quiet hotel was act...

What an absolutely beautiful hotel and setting. Our room was in the cloisters and you really felt as if you had gone back in time. Breakfast very good. Stayed three evenings and had lovely meals each evening, the host was very charming and welcoming. The setting is total unbelievable, so beautiful and it was very hard to leave. Definitely a place to stay more than one evening.

A beautiful isolated building, originally an abbey, but now a hotel with good views across the valley, including to the remains of Umbriano, a village deserted in the 1930's. Small bar area serving local wines and snacks. Breakfast room with good range of food to eat at tables in sheltered area of lovely courtyard. No restaurant in hotel, but excellent third party-run restaurant beside and underneath it (Hora Media). Comfortable rooms and helpful, friendly staff. Massages and some spa services available.

Location is perfectly romantic. Beautifull building with many rooms for relaxation, reading, watching tv. Cool corridors inside the abbey. The aerea is completely silent, just birds singing. The wide balcony-like grass terrace is stunning, with a row of deckchairs the valley and
Most cheerfull and helpfull people.

Room Tip: We stayed 8 nights and had the best possible room: the suite di faroaldo. Large room, kingsize bed...
