“The place to ride if you want great scenery!”

A.A. Taos Ski Valley Wilderness Adventures
Reviewed 12 July 2014

I chose Wilderness Adventures to do horseback riding because it seemed to offer the best mountain scenery of any of the outfitters offering trail rides. We have our own horses so the actual riding aspect was not as important to us as being able to see some spectacular sights. I know I chose the right place!
Our trail guide, Blake, picked us up at a ski lodge parking lot, then took us further up the mountain to where the horses were waiting. Even though we are experienced riders he was required to give us a safety talk, which is understandable, and as I listened to him I thought how he'd broken things down and made them very simple for novices to understand. We then rode from an elevation of about 10,500' to above the tree line at 12,500'. Unfortunately it was an extremely windy day and I would estimate the winds at the top had to be at least 70mph. The horses performed great though, nothing at all like mine at home would have been in that wind!

We were prepared and did dress warm, be sure to take a jacket even in summer. We went in June and dressed quite warm and were glad we had. Still snow in places near the top and the air is definitely cooler. If you get a good wind like we did you will freeze if you don't.

I highly recommend riding with Wilderness Outfitters, they were the best!

I highly recommend this outfitter for the ultimate scenic trail ride!

Al is concerned with your safety and giving you a great adventures. Unless you are into hard hiking, this is the only way to get some spectacular views. From the horse camp to the top of the mountain above the tree line, wonderful scenery. Would do again and try Al's dinner ride or overnight. Highly recommend.

I just love to play in the snow, especially when it's on a snowmobile. Big Al will show you the basics, and how to ride safely. There are no guard rails up on the mountains.
His sleds are well maintained, and if you didn't bring warm clothing or boots, Al will provide them at no additional cost. I had a great time, and would go again.

For those wanting a unique Taos experience, this is it. Big Al & his wranglers are friendly, knowledgeable & safety conscious. A meandering four-wheel drive through an alpine forest begins the adventure, bringing you up to a real cowboy camp.

After an orientation & safety overview you're matched with one of the beautiful well trained horses. Easily navigated trails soon get you above tree line where spectacular views unfold in all directions. We were fortunate enough to see big horn sheep & mule deer, as well as an assortment of birds & wildflowers.

Back at camp you can spend some time relaxing & reflecting on your ride or kick back & listen to Big Al describe some of his adventures. The 15 course snack is not to be missed.

If you want value, Big Al is the real deal for authentic New Mexican horseback riding.

Al does a wonderful trail ride. This is a great opportunity for those who have either never ridden or not ridden in a long time. I went with my 14 y.o. daughter who had never ridden (other than being led around at petting zoos as a young child). We were on a ride with 3 other young, inexperienced riders and two experienced riders. He rode near the inexperienced riders and his wonderful assistant rode up front with the more experienced riders. He had a thorough orientation before the ride, showing all the riders the basics (how to turn the horses, how to stop the horses, how to get them going). He then had all the riders show him they were paying attention and were able to do all the basics. He then placed all riders on horses that matched their skills and the ride began. If you are looking for a more challenging, open area ride with some faster riding, this is not for you. But if you are a beginner (or even more experienced) and looking for a ride with wonderful views and scenery, this is a great trail ride.
