According to the 2010 Fodor guide to Spain, we would be tempted to never stray beyond the hotel property. What would keep us on the premise 24/7?? The original building is a villa dating from the Victorian era. Our room was in this original house. Noisey is the descriptive word! The pipes bang. The air-conditioner roars and the small elevator grinds. Due to high ceilings and hard surface flooring, noise in the hall is amplified. Bring your ear plugs!
As for the spa, it consists of two dressing rooms, two treatment rooms, an exercise faciltity, a small indoor pool, a jacuzzi and a sauna. Theer are only 3 chaises around the pool. Small!
The garden is pleasant, but is not well landscaped. As others have written, the hotel abuts a city park. The lake is a pond and the park is heavily used. While we were there a youth day camp was operating in the park. Serene it was not.
Staff, young Europeans from several different countries, do double duty. The bar tender is also the bell captain and delivers all room service. We had a long wait at the bar while he performed his other duties.
Our rate included breakfast, which was quite good. It is a European breakfast with crusty breads, Spanish sausages & jambon, cheese, croissants, a variety of cereals, fresh squeezed juices and coffee, Spanish style, i.e. espresso.
I was disappointed due to the Fodor hype. The hotel is charming from the outside and the staff works very hard. I expected more from the room and the amenities.
Puigcerda can be toured in half a day. There are few historical sites and the cafe scene is not impressive. The more spectacular mountains are in the distance. We spent 2 days, which was one day too many.
