“Great Experience for all ages from a well-traveled family!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2012

We stayed here over Easter with our two small children and my husbands parents. We all travel abroad frequently and we all had a wonderful time. We had joining rooms in building 1. We had a great view of the pool and we were very close to the ocean. While it wasn't the most elegant room I have stayed it, it was very clean and the beds were extremely comfortable. We thought it was great. We did not check out the reservation only restaurants because we could only get late reservation times (9p.m.) which were not ideal for our family. However, we found the buffet to be excellent with an exciting variety. In the morning there was always somebody making omelettes and eggs to order and another making french toast and pancakes. For lunch and dinner, there were chefs serving fresh arepas, empañadas, fish, beef, and other cultural meals. There was plenty of variety and the food was great overall. The bartenders were nice and the drinks were good. I recommend drinking a dirty monkey or a deep purple! :) The pools were amazing and the swim up bars at both pools were great. We even took part in the water aerobics and dance classes and enjoyed those. The best thing we did, was to get in contact with Alberto, also known as Chino, who took us around to various attractions. We were able to do about 3 tours worth of things with him in one day at our pace. It was great. We fed monkeys, went on a crocodile tour, stopped off to make sugarcane juice, took a canopy tour, and ate at a fabulous Costa Rican restaurant. I am a Spanish teacher, so I loved to speak Spanish with Chino all day and get the scoop on anything and everything Costa Rican. My in-laws do not speak any Spanish. They loved that Chino could explain things to them in English and that the entire day was at our pace. Chino was great with our kids and they already miss him. Back to the property - we saw iguanas all over the place. Our kids loved it. On our last day in Costa Rica, Chino took us to see the Poas Volcano. We got there at the perfect time and got to see the crater with minimal clouds -- it is always somewhat cloud covered. Then we hiked to a beautiful volcanic lagoon! We made a few pit stops along the way to get some coffee and some strawberries that they sold at various spots along the road. We also spent some time building sand castles on the beach. It is a black sand beach, so it is a little different. The sunsets were gorgeous and their long pier helped to create great family photos at sunset. The employees were very helpful when we needed anything and were willing to speak Spanish to me and English to the others. I think we all got the great experience that we were hoping for. I wish you a fabulous vacation if you choose this resort.

Room Tip: Building 1 is by the main pool and close to the action. Building 3 is farther away from everything...

Arrived for a week stay mid April, Monday to Monday. Beautiful resort, much nicer than what I expected after reading some of the reviews here on Trip Advisor. The building, grounds, gardens, pool are very nice and well kept. However, I'd like to say "Shame on Hilton" for allowing their name to be attached to this facility only because of building #1. Being a Hilton Honors member, I am ashamed for Hilton at the condition of building 1 and I only saw it from the outside. The windows were old galvanized with dark brown, from dirt, screens that were rotted out and blowing in the wind, paint peeling etc. Hard to believe this sore spot is even on the grounds of an otherwise beautiful place. We ventured to this area of the grounds only because we had to park over on that side of the resort. After just looking at building 1 from the outside, I can say I wouldn't allow my family to stay there. I have no doubt that the pictures that other travelers have posted of building 1 are accurate.
As many have stated, you must request and stay in building 2 or 3. Preferably building 3. Building 2 was very nice but we didn't see the inside of their rooms. We heard from other guests that they were very happy with their rooms in building 2. We requested with our reservation and were given a room in building 3, # 3312. It was a very nice, clean and updated room. All rooms in building 3 appeared to have balconies overlooking the pool with a partial ocean view. The king size bed was very comfortable, air conditioning worked great, large bathroom, security safe in room was useful.
The pools are beautiful, we spent most our time out and about on adventures and didn't actually use the pools that much. But, when we did, we stayed at the pool surrounded by building 3 with a swim up bar. As many others have stated in their reviews, there are LOTS of pools lounge chairs for everyone. There weren't many kids there, pretty laid back until Friday. Things definately got busy and many locals arrived on Friday with a couple of conventions going on at that time too.
The food in the buffet area was decent I guess, exactly what you'd expect in a buffet setting. Each night they had different theme of foods. Mexican, American, Itallian, Cuban...etc. Our favorite was the Mexican night. The drinks at the bar were not bad. Some have commented on Trip Advisor about the weak drinks. I guess you just have to have the smarts to simply "ask" for a double. We figured that out real fast!! Another hint is to simply ask for a shot of your choice alcohol on the side. Many guests ordered their drinks 2-3 at a time. We wisened up on day 3 and gave our favorite bartender a tip and he became very attentive to us after that. We figured a $10 tip each night was nothing for the many drinks we had. I know it's "all inclusive" but it doesn't hurt!!! It all comes down to what you're willing to pay I guess...
The staff were all accomidating and helpful, most all spoke at least enough English to get by. Many spoke very good English and if they didn't, they got other staff to help us. They only thing I did see was that the waiters/waitress's, who do not work for tips, often acted as if they were "just doing a job" without a lot of added enthusiasim. Housekeeping was very accomidating to our requests and always left our room beautiful.
There were many activiites everyday for all ages. Nightly stage shows were provided, these were fun to attend but seemed kinda late to start at 2130 (9:30) PM. The shows were entertaining but lacking in variety. I will say, we only saw 2 of the shows during our week stay and they both included the same comedian guy and cultural dancing. Both shows were different and provided a variety of dancing styles.
Getting to the resort was interesting. We choose to rent a car and drove there ourselves. They old original hiway takes about and hour and half to two hours to drive there. The new hiway only takes an hour. Our total for a mid size 4x4 vehicle for the week was just over $800. Many here on Trip Advisor report about $90 each one way to the resort via shuttle or taxi. That would have been cheaper but we like to get out on our own and venture around the country. The culture of Costa Rica is very laid back but those that drive are not laid back at all and they are very scary drivers. You must be very defensive in your driving skills and on the ball. It was obvious to us that most local drivers totally disregard the laws. Their roads and driving rules appear to all be the same as the U.S. If you do rent a car and have never been to CR, you must rent a GPS. Roads do not have names and you will certainly get lost.
There is nothing around the local area of the resort to see or do. If you want to leave the resort and go see things, you have to leave by an arranged trip or drive yourself. Tiquicia Tours, across the street from the resort, are fantastic at setting you up with whatever adventure you want to set out for. If you are into just hanging at the resort to eat, drink and swim then you have no worries about having to get around the area.
The beach..... If you are expecting to arrive and swim or snorkle you will be very disapointed. That was not our plan so we didn't care. The only people swimming at the beach were the locals. The beaches are a dark in color with quite a bit of river debris. There are many rivers flowing into the ocean that are coming a short distance from very high mountains with a lot of sediment...thus, providing a not so tropical type of beach.
One last fun thing to share.... Take some fruit pieces and go out to the far side of building 3 where the property ends and is fenced to the private home next door. In the late afternoon, early evening there are a large amount of iguanas there. Go up to the second level and throw small pieces of fruit to them. If you don't see them at first, just throw it.....and trust me, they will come!! They hide in the fencing bushes between the properties!! Have fun :)

Room Tip: Make sure you request a room in building 2 or 3. Confirm this and make sure you do not end up in bui...

Recent stay here was a disaster. As a HH member we used points to stay over Easter, a disappointing waste of points. Contact from the HH manageress prior to our arrival was poor. We were 'upgraded' upon arrival to a honeymoon suite in building 2, of this had been my honeymoon I would have thrown myself off the balcony-oh wait there was no balcony, ok thrown myself out of the window-oh wait they didn't open and were too dirty to see out of! The rooms in building 3 were newer and we were promised a transfer to one of these rooms half way during our stay. The hotel was packed and it was impossible to get sinners around the pool, because despite there being a policy of 'no sunbed saving' this was not followed by the guests, mainly locals, and not enforced by any of the security/attendants. The buffet food for lunch and dinner was appalling, breakfast was passable-made to order omlettes each day for us. Drinks were weak, cocktails were just fruit juice, house wine and beer passable. Service was very poor, probably as there was a no tipping culture, waiters/bartenders were surprised to receive a tip. Bills include 13% tax and a compulsory 10% service charge in Costa Rica so the staff here perhaps saw no reason to provide great service. The two a la carte restaurants were better, but you are only permitted to eat there once for every three nights you stay. We made a fuss and were given vouchers to eat there every night-but the standard was still not great, not a patch on a decent all inclusive in Mexico. There is really nothing near this hotel, the beach is very dark sand, they don't even have sunbeds out as nobody wants to go on it, the sea is murky and all day long there is a constant stream of ships passing from the nearby port-which does not make you want to swim. I've read other reviews which say that Hilton bought up an old property and turned it into a doubletree, which makes sense. Shame on them for putting their name to this and not putting any investment into the property or the service that is expected from Hilton.
We checked out half way through our stay, we had a hire car-thank god, and drove an hour and a half to Manuel Antonio/Quepos, the best move of our holiday-fabulous place, great beaches and views like none other.

Upon arrival received a warm and friendly welcome by the consierge and desk staff. While eating a deliciously warm cookie was given an explanation of all activities available at the hotel.
We were pleasantly suprised with our room. It was very large, clean and overlooked the ocean and pools. We normally have problems sleeping when away, but not here. The king size mattress and pillows were very comfortable.
We found all the hotel staffs to be extremely friendly and very helpful. Everyone went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. We had a little problem with ants on the balcony and they were dealt within minutes of our calling the front desk. The pools and grounds were cleaned daily as well the staff were constantly cleaning up after guests. Everything was spotless. We found the resort to be just the right size. Everything was within walking distance and plenty of shady places to lounge at. The buffet restaurant was absolutely fantastic. There were so many choices available, and yes we tried them all, and even had desert. However, if you're a coffee drinker, we found the bar served the best coffee. The restaurant coffee was drinkable but not what we are used to.
If you plan on taking day trips this hotel is within an hour or two drive from all attractions.
We would recommend this hotel to anyone.
PS: With all the walking, zip lining and horseback riding we did during our stay I used the service of the hotels massage therapist. This was the best sports massage I have ever had and believe me I've had quite a few at home.

Room Tip: Building 3, 3rd floor was found to be quieter.

We spent 5 days here and it exceeded our expectations. We read all the reviews and we were pleasantly surprised. We stayed in Bldg 3 (recommend as it is newer). We were warmly greeted at reception and had daily water as well as towel animals in our room. Our room overlooked the water (3336) and the balcony provided great sunset views. The pool bar was good, but stay away from the dark rum drinks (aste like gasoline). The food was ok at best, however we did not plan to spend a lot of time at the resort as we were there to explore. Puntarenas can be missed as it is not very attractive. The specialty restaurants did not live up to being "Special" at all. Stay away from the whole fish as it is very bony . Since i used points on the stay it was free so from a value standpoint it was very good.

Room Tip: 3336 (Bldg 3) overlooks the water
