My group wanted a winter get away that was not too far from the USA and not too costly. We chose Puerto Rico because it is a US territory therefore no passports, no customs, basically no hassle. We chose to stay at a resort but at a villa on the property that was rented by owner. The reason we did this is we wanted beachfront access. We also researched the resort and found from other's reviews that eating on the property would be about $100 a day per person! A villa allowed us to prepare our own meals and although it was a little more costly than the hotel room we think it was a better value because we could prepare our own meals. We also had access to all the resorts amenities but our villa was privately owned so the hotel quests did not have access to our area. I am not sure how many units were in the condo but my guess is 100 to 150. During the week we stayed maybe 15 of those units were rented however the hotel looked full. My point is that we had a very private area that included 2 pools and beach with loungers! The beach was cleaned every am by a worker on a tractor picking up seaweed that had washed ashore!! We did not eat on the property but found a great restaurant just left of the resort's entrance called Richie's Cafe. I highly recommend this restaurant for its food, fun and atmosphere. Richie is there almost every nite (we saw him all three times we were there) and he is the perfect example of a restaurant owner - he made us feel so welcome! We also rented a car thru Thrifty because they were the best deal. Total for a week's rental $183. Now it was a Kia Rio but it worked (our next visit we will upgrade the car as the island has lots of pot holes and that car is small with little shock absorption!!) We toured the island on our own (find or bring maps as the tourists maps are very good for driving directions and our GPS wasn't that updated!) and felt very safe. Not knowing Spanish was not much of a barrier. We took two excursions a Bioluminescent Bay tour and Kayak/Snorkle tour. I will write a review on those places seperately but the companies we went through were Island Adventures for the Bioluminescent Bay and Kayak Puerto Rico. Both companies I recommend highly for value, service and safety. In summary, go to Puerto Rico for a great fun in the sun getaway. Stay at the Rio Mar Wyndham Resort (recommend the villas), rent through Thrifty (great service and price- look for their van at airport and they will take you to service counter off airport grounds) and use Island Adventures and Kayak Puerto Rico! Great value - for my husband and myself: airfare, villa, 1/2 car rental, two excursions, our food and spending money we did this trip just under $4000. We went with another couple and shared the villa and cost of car. We live in southeastern US and flew to Miami then to PR. Wasn't crazy about American Airlines - lost luggage no customer service...you know the drill. Visit Puerto Rico!!!
