My wife and I are just wrapping up 5 kid free days at the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach resort (we are checking out tomorrow Oct 15th). We have some very mixed feelings about the place.

This may be the right place for you or it may not depending on what you are looking for. I have attempted to outline my observations for deciding if this is the right resort for you below.

I have given some different ratings to different areas below to help you figure out if this is the right resort for you:

- Staff Friendliness - A+

The staff has been exceptionally friendly and helpful since the moment we arrived.

- Rooms (Room a B actual view A+)

The rooms are average. King bed, small TV, small balcony. Not bad but not anything special.

If you are trying to decide what view you should request i recommend the rain forest view and a higher floor is better. It is a view of the mountains covered in rain forest and was one of the highlights of the entire trip. The worst view you can have is the pool view. Looking at the ocean view is nice but by Caribbean standards the ocean is average. The uninterrupted view of the mountains on the other side of the resort is very impressive and more unique by Caribbean standards.

We did have an issue where we did not have enough water pressure to take as hower many evenings. The engineering staff told us it was hard to keep the water pipes full when guests numbers are down (October is the slow season). This is a stupid and annoying problem to have.

- Beaches "D minus"

If you are coming here for the white sand, debri free beaches with cabanas and lots of covered chairs on the beach then you will be disappointed.

We could not get in the actual water any day. It was a red flag everyday. I am not sure we would have wanted to. The beaches have lots of trash and debri on them and are public beaches not part of the resort.

There are no cabanas or the like on the beaches because it is public.

If beach quality is what you are after i suggest you look elsewhere you will be disappointed.

- Pools & Bars "A+"

If you are here because you want amazing pools and pool side bars this is the place for you. There are several bars with tons of big screen TVs, 3 large pools, 3 hot tubs and a happening fun atmosphere. If this is what you are looking for then you will be very happy her.

- Food "B"

The breakfast buffet is excellent and the rest of the food is a little above average. There is very limited selection of restaurants so you will get tired of eating at the places if you are here for a week and don't want to leave the property.

- Water Activities "C minus"

If you are looking for snorkeling, scuba diving, windsailing, paddle boarding etc... this is NOT the place for you. I love all those things and this place has NONE of those things. Not sure what the resort fee actually pays for

- Golf "A minus"

There are two 18 hole golf courses on property. One by Tom Fazio and one by Greg Norman. Both are great layouts, bunkers are excellent and fairways are cut where you can see the grid of the mower lines. The greens on the ocean course where good but the ones on teh river course had an invasive species of weed growing in them that really messed with the puts. The club house is great, staff great, they store you clubs for free so you don't have to mess with them in the hotel room, and they take them directly their for you.

If you want a place where you spouse can just chill and you have some fun, non crowded nice golf options right on property this may be the place for you. I recommend the ocean course, especially if you are someone that likes to have lots of risk reward options off the tee. Please note thought, don't think Pebble beach. There is only 1 hole on the Ocean.

- Family Friendliness "B"

We did not bring our kids so this is just by observation. There are no kids buffets or anything like that and only one small water slide. There are 3 big pools.

It think our kids would get board here (they are all young under 10) mainly due to the lack of ability to play in the ocean and just lack of variety. If you are going to bring kinds you probably want to think about doing a number of excursions during the day.

- Wyndham Rewards F Minus

I am a Diamond Member at Wyndham. With teams i have sent around the country in the last 18 months i have spent over $70,000 at Wyndham resorts. So far the best thing i have received the two different times i have used my points is free late check out.

I booked this months in advance. I understand there are always logistical limitations to suite upgrades etc... but I didn't even get any type of Diamond welcome basket, extra bottles of water etc...

Not that any of that is game changing but my conclusions after this trip is that i am not using Wyndham with teams i send around the country anymore. Being the highest level of Wyndham rewards gets you nothing.

What is the point of a rewards loyalty program if when you reach the highest level the hotel doesn't move mountains to make sure you have an exceptional stay?

I received more upgrades with my gold level at Hilton then my Diamond at Wyndham.

My conclusion with Wyndham rewards after this trip was i definitely picked the wrong hotel chain to give my loyalty too and will be focusing on a different chain going forward.

- This is a hotel you should really consider if:
You want a golf resort
You want great pools and bars
You want the resort on a huge property (whole property is 500 plus acres)

- You will be disappointed in this resort if:
Want to snorkel and scuba dive
Want a great, debris free, private beach
Want lots of restaurants to try and lots of food variety
Are a Wyndham Diamond member and think you should receive any unique
treatment

Hope this helps you guys. For my wife and I we will not be returning.

Room Tip: Get the Rainforest View & Do not get the pool view.

Michigan couple visiting family in San Juan. We had an overnight getaway. Bed was DELICIOUS! Comfy, great pillows&linens. Ocean view amazing! Clean beautiful room. Used voucher in dining room for wonderful breakfast ( need better tea though). Happy to see great recovery after Hurricane Maria. Hope there's a rewards program. Would love to return for a honeymoon❤

We stayed first week in October. We stayed in a Studio room on the Margaritaville side and had an Ocean View. We were so close, I could sit on the balcony and not only see, but hear the ocean waves. Since we had a studio, we enjoyed the refrigerator, 2-stove top, microwave, sink, coffee maker and small dishwasher. The resort is only 3 years old and they were closed for about 6 months repairing after hurricane Maria (Sept 2017). The resort has great furniture and design. I just kept seeing design and layout that gave this resort a real wow factor. I say go if you can.

Room Tip: Walk around and orient yourself. You will find easily find out which pool you prefer to use.

The WG Rio Mar is almost an insoluble mixture of good things and not so good things...

For example the view of the ocean & pool from the rooms is both pleasing and soothing, (the mountain view should be the same)the rooms are above average but in a good sense; clean nice, new (after Maria), the desire of the personnel to please and do a good job is also very high. The fixing of the property after the hurricane, is spotless. You can’t realized the property went through a hurricane in 2017

On the bad side: Its almost a problem with execution; problems with things that can be fixed within a week if a manager gets really mad an fix them at once.

Here are samples of those things: the full breakfast buffet is very limited, very limited alternatives on fruits, no salads, huge line for omelets, inconsistent coffee and a staff that cannot make an expresso. It almost feels as if the waiters are getting mixed instructions and are improvising instead.

They make you wait 5,10, 15 min standing for a table while a person comes to indicate that there is a table open (need radios!). They treat you like if you are a captive client once you get there...

The parking is weird. Our room rate included parking. When we got there, we were told it was only self parking and that if you selected valet parking you will get no credit from the rate. Then a guy said “don’t tell the front desk” and just come and pay the difference at the valet desk when you leave.

The front desk and the bar were both understaffed, at least for a Saturday night.

Hope things change within a week...!
