The plate of the day (3 course) for 14euro was a life saver after an epic day cycling up the 2000m pass where the restaurant sits. At that point, definitely the best meal of our 1 month tour, both for taste, service, setting and value.

In a stunning setting, surrounded by mountains and motorbikes, this restaurant gave us one of the most memorable meals of our holiday. The set menu du jour at 14 euros for three courses is amazing value. The plate of hors d'ouevres included local cheese, a courgette salad, the most delicious coffee-cup of pickled mushrooms with sultanas, a spoonful of tuna salad on a slice of ripe tomato, and a puree of artichokes - and that was just the first course. It was followed by a rich, delicious casserole of meltingly tender pork cheek in a wild mushroom sauce, with a huge dish of creamy mashed potatoes, and we all finished with a hefty slice of home-made tarte aux myrtilles. Everything was freshly made in the kitchen of Les Roches Blanches using local ingredients, beating many far more expensive meals we had eaten during our holiday. Highly recommended, as is this beautiful route over the Alps.

We used to eat regularly in Sophie's previous restaurant in Lanslevillard - she has now moved up to Fontainettes on the col du Mont Cenis and has a small café/restaurant/hotel. If you're using the pass look for the pyramid-shaped church on the road and the resto is on the edge of the car park.

Sophie's prides herself on preparing everything from fresh ingredients - there is a limited standard menu (allegedly to make her life less hectic but demand is high .....) and a 'plat du jour' - she tipped us off that she had mussels on the menu today and we were off! She gave us a massive quantity of mussels and copious quantities of chips - the mussel sauce was very spoonworthy. Unfortunately we overdid the mussels so no room for one of her desserts - just coffee.

The resto is in a long line of similar competing establishments in a favourite spot for tourists - weekends can be very crowded - booking is essential. Ignore the other establishments.

Sophie is only open in the summer when the pass is open - May-ish to end of September(ish).

Of little use unless you live there ....... but Sophie is a brilliant caterer for events - she 'did' our 40th wedding bash and is lined up for the 50th in four years time.
