So, you approach, horror-movie style, past the charred remnants of one of the chalets. "Is it safe to stay here?", the children asked. Well, apparently, no one was hurt when the building burnt down of New Year's Eve, so to that extent it hopefully is. But a brand-new building reduced to ashes by a stray firework? It's not impressive.

Equally unimpressive was the reception room. A vast featureless hall which would have been much animated by an - intended, this time - fire in the large central fireplace. But, no, here we were on the busiest change-over day of the skiing year, more or less, and no one could be bothered to set a fire. (I saw in alight once in the course of the week.)

This absence of welcome was reinforced when we were told that wifi access in our accommodation for eight was 'volontairement' (deliberately) restricted to two (increased to three on appeal) people. So what are the other five supposed to do? There is no hint of any restriction in the advertising, and to that extent I do not think this is a venue which delivers what it promises.

And so to the apartment. Comfortable, clean and generally well equipped, but again with niggles. Why does the kitchen have no fan or convection oven? Why has a new property been fitted with such harsh overhead lighting? Objectively, this is really quite a good place to stay (and generally quiet), and with good spa facilities too. But its location is somewhat 'lost' between the two villages of Val Cenis, and I left it with little affection.

Dear "Acer sed justus",

We are very pleased to read that you find Les Chalets de Flambeau a good place to stay.

I am sorry to read that the information was not given by your travel agency regarding wifi and the general settings of the appartments. They are visiting us often enough and know about the installations of the private owners appartments.

Dont hesitate to book straight with us, or with our call center next time to have those informations.

We look forward to your next visit in Val Cenis or in one of our other 33 residences through the Alps.

Best regards,
Philippe E

Very clean and very conveniently located. Access to hiking trails all around. Very friendly and welcoming staff. As with anywhere in France, access to WiFi is not so evident and limited but this seems to be a French trade-mark. Rented a little 2-bedroom apartment which was well furnished and all was perfect. Too bad there was some construction around but it was not a real nuisance.

We drove there for a week's skiing in early March 2016. The apartment was absolutely fine with friendly service and was excellent for a quiet family oriented self catering break. There's a handy mini supermarket nearby. It's not for people who want bars and apres ski activities. Free parking outside, or charge for covered parking nearby. Free wifi a bit slow. Regarding skiing - we were lucky with big snow dumps before arrival, then lots of sunshine yet still cold. Ideal for beginners with plenty of easy runs, and enough reds for intermediates too. Apartment was very easy ski-in, and pretty much ski-out with a very short walk.

Room Tip: If using balcony might prefer not being on ground floor, and a flat layout with the balcony that extends out

We have been skiing in the French Alps once or twice each year for nearly forty years. We always drive and organize our own self-catered apartments and have never stayed in the same place twice. Believe me - we have tried every level of resort and accommodation - AND THIS WAS SIMPLY ONE OF THE BEST. The best for size (4 people in an apartment for 6), the best for value for money, one of the best for position in the resort and most of all, best for its build quality and fitments and fittings. A fast, large lift to small landings with almost no walking to the door. The free WiFi was fast. We could not believe that these apartments were not brand new this year. Everything was top quality - comfortable furniture in the large living room - excellent, fitted kitchen - large bedrooms with large, comfortable beds - large balcony with a great view.
The management office was situated in the same block. They were friendly and helpful and quick to respond when any problem arose. e.g. a light bulb was replaced within half an hour. The inclusive pool and spa looked good from the outside but we did not venture in.
One negative. We were on the north side of the block which meant wonderful views up the slopes but permanent shade on the balcony all day. So it's probably best to forego the view and ask for a south facing balcony which overlooks the other side of the valley - still not bad.
Overall this apartment made the week. Good skiing but not enough to return just for the apartment again. I envy people who still have the experience to come.

Room Tip: Choose top floor (lift is fast) and definitely south facing for the sun. Still good views.

We arrived "early" but helpful front desk staff were happy to see us into the accommodation straight away, and at the end of our week, they stored our luggage for several hours after "official" departure time. This allowed us an extra half day of skiing instead of the usual Saturday morning sitting in a motorway jam on the way home. This was typical of the helpfulness they showed all week. Remember, however that they won't be available during the long French lunch hour, except on arrival day.

Four adults shared a three bedroom apartment, with a spacious living room well equiped kitchen and two bathrooms. The whole was very well kitted out.

The ski lockers are in the basement and are two minutes from a chair lift giving access to the rest of the resort. The spa facilities are excellent and the indoor pool is a delight, very clean, surrounded by loungers all giving great Alpine views. Some reviewers complained that the pool was too cold. Well, it seemed fine to me, and there are four saunas where more tender souls can build up body heat.

About ten minutes from the complex, there is are well stocked village shops with everything needed for self catering, though we stopped off for supplies at the Carrafour in Bugey, where everything is much cheaper.

Taking our break in late January was a huge saving - Eurotunnel plus accommodation worked out at less than £300 per person for the week. This made it affordable luxury. However, prices almost triple for school holidays.

The Apres Ski is limited in Val Cenis but if you want good skiing at a decent price, this is the place. The skiing was brilliant for our mixed party of experienced and novice skiers, with good snow and plenty of choice ranging from long slow green runs though to several quite challenging black runs. The opportunities for off piste are limited in Val Cenis but this did not bother our group.

We found it hard to find things to dislike, and would all, both go again, and recommend to friends and family
