“No service from struggling airline”

We flew twice within 2 months time with SAA. First time we flew during Feb to Mozambique and the second time we flew to Mauritius. The service on the Maputo flight was not good at all. Personnel had the attitude of doing as a favor instead of being of service to the paying customers. We only booked SAA again for our trip to Mauritius because the departing and arrival times were better. One would think that if you were employed by a struggling airline the service would be out of this world to ensure the customers return, but not with SAA. Such a pity.

This was our third flight with South African. It was a bit late leaving, as were the flights, but the in flight service reminds me of past glory days for other airlines. They just give more service and with a smile all the while. A very pleasant surprise. And on this flight, the entertainment system worked perfectly as well.

Very attentive flight attendants, great service, good food. Air Canada should learn from them. Some auxiliary bits like the in-flight entertainment system were less top quality due to maintenance and worked less reliably or not at all. Luggage handling was rough enough to break a bottle of red vermouth inside my checked luggage wrapped by duty free! Bad consequences for my clothes. Can't say if it was airline or airport handling.

The plane was newish and very clean. Staff happy people very good service. Was on time leaving and arriving. Happy to fly again.
Take care at O R Tambo, they change the gate often and no announcements. When you time gets close ask others where they are going!!

I was very pleasently surprised by SAA. New, clean aircraft, and excellent service. Reasonable seat pitch for economy. (In other words, cramped, but far better than most other airlines) I forgot to order vegetarian, and the crew made a huge effort to find a veg meal, which led me to conclude that, overall, the service was much better than I would expect in economy.

Entertainment was generally good, with a wide selection of movies, and sound and video was excellent.

All flights were on time and I had no problems with baggage, or any other issues.

If you are flying to or within South Africa, I would recommend SAA above all other carriers.
