“Thought it was a full service flight”
Review of British Airways

Reviewed 6 April 2018 via mobile

We booked BA, thinking it was a full service airline. Unfortunately, we were wrong. Drinks on boatd had to be paid for.

Staff were professional and everyone had a chance to order a drink or snack, even though it was a full flight

Impressed by London city airport, as the flight wasn’t full it was a pleasant flight, I was very happy with the bacon roll, normally I would say it was horrible but this seemed to be fresher than I expected.

When we flew home from Cape Town to London - there was an older plane with less space and very bad seats. Given the long journey time, this was quite inconvenient. The staff were also in the "upper middle age" - they did well their work OK but without any enthusiasm. However, when we flew from London to Cape Town, there was a more modern aircraft with better space and better seats (but the same bit of boring staff)

Having booked our tickets we paid an additional £58.00 per person (each way) to secure what BA terms as Duo seats. These are the last three rows of economy class on the Boeing 747 where, to cater for the tapering of the airline fuselage, the seating configuration reduces from the usual 3-4-3 to 2-4-2. In my opinion this is money well spent on a long overnight flight for a couple travelling together. They can also be found on the upper deck of BA’s Airbus A380
On line check in was easy and the bag drop at Terminal Three was swift and efficient. (This is one of a handful of BA flights that does not operate from/to Terminal Five) Having passed Security we headed to the boarding gate. Boarding is now undertaken by Group Number as printed on the boarding pass. This ensures that those travelling in the premium cabins and those of highest frequent flyer status are boarded in the appropriate priority. Needless to say we were in the last group. That said, there is ample overhead storage space in the Boeing 747 so there is little need for the boarding stampede that has become the haul-mark of the modern day short haul flight.
Departure was on time, almost to the minute, with ample announcements from the flight deck and cabin crew. Once at cruising altitude drinks were served followed by dinner. A choice of chicken or a vegetarian dish was offered, both of which we judged to be adequate. In flight entertainment was via small seat back screens. The choice and range of films and programmes was good with a handful of recent releases, but the overall picture and sound quality left a lot to be desired. The Flight Services Director made two attempts to reset what was clearly a very dated system. This seems to work for parts of the aircraft but not for ours, so we eventually gave up. The crew were evident throughout the night with an almost hourly round of water and juice service.
Around ninety minutes prior to arrival a hot breakfast was served which we both declined, opting merely for coffee. We arrived on time and disembarkation was smooth as was baggage reclaim. All in all and OK experience but nothing that would have us rushing to BA as the “must have” airline
