My wife and I were traveling for vacation and decided to book business class since Aer Lingus didn't offer a nonstop wide-body jet from DC to Dublin. The seats were considerably more expensive than coach (as expected) but commensurate with business and first class seats we have booked in the past. While the price was similar to United Polaris, the experience was not. The aircraft was not that well-maintained. The interior was dated and not cleaned very well. I didn't expect the same spacious "pods" that we've experienced on larger aircraft, but considering the cost, I did expect better. The lie-flat seats were not very comfortable at all. They were thinly cushioned, and the control panels were placed in such a way that my arm was constantly pressing the buttons and causing the seat to move. Unfortunately, the entertainment console associated with my wife's seat was inoperative for the entire flight. There was no mention of any compensation. It truly doesn't take an extraordinary effort to keep us happy, but it would have been nice had the crew shown just a little effort to smooth this over. Electronics break, I get it, but we did, in fact, pay for something we didn't get.
The on-board service was "adequate." I typically experience the same degree of service in the economy section of just about every airline I have flown. I'm not trying to be snooty, but when you pay $5k per seat, you expect a little better. Just to compare, the last time I flew business class (United Polaris), my butt wasn't in the seat for more than 15 seconds before a flight attendant referred to me by name and offered me a pre-takeoff cocktail. There was a genuine effort to live up to the cost. Not so on this Aer Lingus flight. In hindsight, economy would've been fine. I don't feel like the experince matched the cost.
