Is Roatán the place for us first timers?

Hello, my husband and I have been to several Carribean islands and have enjoyed all of them but we would like to try something new. Roatan came up as a great place for snorkeling so we have a few questions before we decide if this is the place for us. Firstly we love beautiful beaches with fairly calm water and white sand. We would like to be able to walk right out into the water and find great snorkeling right off the beach. We need easy access to transportation to other areas but would also like to be near restaurants, bars and shopping. We love renting privately but might consider a hotel if the location and amenities are worth it. Will Roatan fit the bill for us and also if so what area should we stay in and can anyone give us some lodging suggestions that would meet our needs? Thanks!

West Bay has a beach that you can just wade in to snorkel. Lots of choices for restaurants, and if you want to "venture out" a wee bit, you can take a water taxi to West End for $3 per person one way to check out more restaurants and souvenir shops. West End and West Bay are both walkable within their areas. West End has more of a village vibe, whereas West Bay is a beach lined with small resorts. You can walk from one side of the beach to the other side in 15-20 minutes.

There are also a couple of very nice resorts between the two. Ibagari and Xbalanque.

How much is your budget?

A definite yes; Roatan will fit the bill. And I think you would be most happy staying on West Bay Beach. There's lots of rentals to choose from on West Bay Beach - do some googling.

Have a look at West Bay Village for accommodation. It's less resort and more a cluster of private homes.

Rent thru vrbo at Infinity Bay. We are going for the third time. 70 year old snorklers! You won't regret staying at the best spot in west Bay Beach.

Our budget is about $150 a night. We don’t need a high end room just something clean, close to the beach and close to some of the restaurants and activities. You mention walking from one end to the other, is this safe to do at night say we want to go out for dinner or drinks? We are both fine walking but want to be safe.

West End and West Bay are both safe for walking at night. Plenty of restaurant choices in both locations.

West Bay might be more your style. Note that there isn't much "shopping." Check out Rusty Fish for things that are uniquely Roatan.

Happy planning!
