Booking safari in advance or not

Hi,

We are travelling to Diani in 2 weeks time and planning a 3 days Tsavo safari. I wonder if it is possible to book a private safari there. (we are staying for a week so cannot give too long notice). Also I would like to know if it is cheaper to book it there. I want to deal with companies which are KATO members.

Could anyone give advice please?

Many Thanks

Hi,

yes you can book safaris when you are here from local tour agents who often have reps on the beach (beach boys), as well as local offices.

What many people do and is probably best, (unless you know your local tour agent / beach boy and know what you want to do), is to book with a local outfit but do your research, compare itineraries, costs, etc from the comfort of your own home by email. It saves you from wasting valuable holiday time tying to find a deal and you can also ask for advice on whether the itineraries are practicable and the prices reasonable by asking about them on this forum. there are several companies that are regularly recommended on this forum.

Although with only two weeks left you do not have a lot of time to do this as some operators take time responding to emails. As the time scales is so short I don't think there would be much difference whether you book before you come or when you get here.

Book your safari with a local operator before you leave for Kenya you still have plenty of time I only booked mine on Saturday morning and I am leaving for kenya this Friday. I emailed Shadrack from Glorious safaris on Friday evening with my request and he came straight back saying he would be in contact Saturday which he did with a choice of safaris, accommodation options and cost. I confirmed the option I wanted and transferred the money into his UK bank account. Safari Booked and paid for with no need to take large amounts of money to Kenya and no loosing money to exchange rates.

Hi Doffcocker,

Thank-you for the reply. And all your other posts they are all very useful. I will try to do the booking this week. If it does not work, then the beach boys. In this case I will take a list of KATO members with me.

If you find e-mails slow, you can call any member of KATO and do the booking

Hey

Concurring with Bruce (again) and in contradiction with the last post, you shouldn't find email responses from Shadrack to be slow at all! Drop him a line - shadrack@glorioussafaris.com - unless you already have.

Plenty of great reviews on here too if you'd like to read up on others' experiences.

I would always book before going out so you can plan your time better, ensuring you get the most out of your stay. Also, with Glorious, you will have a private safari so you won't be tied down to a set plan, sharing with others so that in itself is a tad flexible too.

Cheers,

Leeds
