Travel to Feodosia

Hi,

We are travelling to the Ukraine in December, and whilst in the Kiev, we thought we might "pop in" to Feodosia. What would be the best option of getting to Feodosia - train to Simferopol or jump out earlier at Dzhankoy? I read that the buses a pretty frequent from Simferopol, is this still the case out of season? Which route do buses take, the coastal or the in-land?

Hi Kasanaval,

Go to Simferopol and then take a bus to Feodosia. Bus won't be a problem even in a low season. And no, it is not a coastal route, as Simferopol is in the center of peninsula

Hi Kasanaval and welcome to Ukraine forum :)

Now that CrimeaConsulting has kindly given you the info you asked about, I can't help but wondering about your decision - Feodosia is not quite the destination one would think of in terms of "popping in" from Kyiv, especially in December.

Hope you have a special reason for going there....

Hi,

Thank you CrimeaConsulting and Cora.

We have now slightly amended the trip to include a day in Yalta as well.

I have relatives in Feodosia and it will be a surprise visit... the last time I was in Feodosia - it was still very much Soviet Union, more than 25 years ago...As for "popping in" - it is mad dogs and Englishmen. )))) Why not?

We also thought it would be an adventure to ride on the sleeper train, and even though my husband still wants to hire a car... after having seen your pictures of the Ukrainian roads, I somehow do not think he will mention driving again.

Another question. Long shot, but we just wondered if there are any ferries/boats from Yalta to Feodosia? Surely, the sea doesn't freeze over and should still be navigable.

Well, last year it did - but in February.

I'll leave it to Crimea residents to confirm, but I don't think there are boats between Yalta and Feodosia. Let alone in December.

The boats do not run in winter. Your best bet is to take the overnight train from Kiev to Simferopol. After exit train turn left, you will walk across parking lot and behind McDonald's is ticket office for buses. The buses are not as frequent in winter, but you will still have no problem getting to Feodosia. I do not recommend driving in winter as the road to Feodosia is hilly in parts and weather can occasionally turn bad.
