Koutouloufari April/May

My husband and I will be staying at Marni village last week in April/ first week in May.How warm will it be? Will most things be open? We have been to Crete before but mainly the Rethymnon/Chania area so do not know this part of the island. We are looking forward to exploring the villages but would also like to travel a bit further. Quite happy to use public transport if it takes us off the beaten track or are taxis necessary for the "must-sees" and nicer beaches?

With thanks for any information

Hi there

Koutouloufari is a pretty village, I'm sure you will love it there. The first week of may is the "official" start of the holiday season, so you should find most places shaking off the dust and raising the shutters although a few might just wait until the first week in May. It's a 10-15 min downhill walk to the bustling resort of Hersonissis , along the main steet there, you will find bus stops in either direction, west to Iraklion ( and all points between) and east to Agios Nikolaos, and all points between.

Once in Iraklion's main bus station, you have a huge range of places you can get to via bus, and similarly from Ag Nik.

There's lots to see within a 30-60 min bus ride from Hersonissos, including all the sights in Iraklion, Knossos ( which you get to via the #2 bus from Iraklion's main station), Malia's Minoan archaeological site, and pretty harbour villages like Sissi and Milatos. The bus to Ag Nik also stops off in the lovely inland town of Neapoli, well worth a couple of hours, a superb church with frescoes inside, 3 or 4 museums, and a wide central square that has tavernas and fruit and veg sellers. Once at Ag Nik, switch to the Plaka bus, take the ride to the village from where you can take the little boat across to Spinalonga island.

The only major sight around the area that is near on impossible to reach is the Lassithi plateau, so if you wanted to see this, you'd either have to book an organised trip or rent a car for the day.

Taxi prices have gone up a lot over the last few years and to be honest, they aren't a particularly good way to get around unless it's a straightforward A to B run.

Hi

You must try the Oniro Restaurant in Koutoulufari, well worth a visit, reasonabily priced and good quality food. We krpt passing this one by, when we finally went in wished we had called in earlier. The earliest we have been there was the first week of May and although the first two days it rained and were pretty cool, it warmed up to a lovely 23/24 degrees for the rest of the week.

Thank you for the prompt response and helpful suggestions. Can someone tell me what the weather should be like at that time of year.

The weather probably won't be much different from the weather in Rethymnon and Chania, but it may not be the same as the year you were there! There is nothing predictable about the weather in Crete. Having said that, it will probably be beautiful at times: sunny and warm, but not hot: perfect for walking. But it is the very start of the season, and you can expect some clouds and a bit of rain. The sea will still be quite cold, and the air temperatures will be cool in the evenings, so bring something warm if you want to eat outdoors.
