Boats are of varying quality, so its hard to say what you are getting for that price. Sounds like an overnight price to me rather than a day cruise.

Normally same boats are using for day cruise and night stay so according to demand rate may very, but normal rate is around Rs. 1000 per hour & around Rs. 300 per person for lunch.

I agree ,spent a lot of time in Alleppey and you need to be careful when choicing an operator , Stay away from people saying they are tourist operators on the street . Because most times they are just touts and some have even little huts or shops that they work from . Go through the Kerala Tourism Department . They did have a small depot on the banks of the canals . KTDC they are fantastic and wil put you in the right hands . They run reasonable trips and can direct you to whats available .Remeber on your trip atke a sun hat water and plenty of suncream it gets mighty hot out on the water .If all else fails go to the Allepey Prince Hotel , They have excellant tours and advise for theses trips, and they arent expensive. Be wary of any tour that is cheap , as you only get what you pay for ok . Some will tell you that they will take you to here there and everywhere. You will find you will see nothing except water ok , So go with the experts . Trust me i have learnt the hard way The quote you got is simple tooo expensive and not worth it

To put this in perspective, the hotel that charged you Rs 12,000 is not ripping you off. They are offering their boat, which otherwise would be used for the full night, so that's the rate. There are others who offer just day cruises so thats who you should be contacting.

Houseboats are given for overnight stay, day cruise (11.00 to 05.00 PM) and houry basis. Askiing Rs 12000 for day cruise in Novemver from Kumarakom is plain robbery. No need to cover it.
