Aru Valley and Betaab Valley, Pahalgam

This is a must.....Very pristine, as yet untouched and just beautiful. Start early. The drive to Aru itself is about 40 minutes or so. The taxi driver normally gives you two hours to look around. That's plenty. Once you get there, hire horses. The costs are fixed and they have a board displaying the amounts. Make sure you wear comfy clothes and shoes. Enjoy the horse-ride. Take your time.

Next proceed to Betaab Valley. Once again, the driver will park the cab and give you an hour to look around. This is more for family outings because people take picnics there. Plenty of areas to set your picnic and enjoy the ambience. We personally preferred Aru over Betaab because it was less commercial and also, we love horses.

Yes I agree Aru valley is far better and less commercialised I would recomend people to stay at least one night in Aru Valley, there are few guest houses and a Dak Bungalow of JKTDC and a camping resort Aru Eco Resort.

We would also recommend both points: both are beautiful in the own right. Take a taxi from the Pahalgam stand: rates are clearly posted.

Watch out for a mini-scam in Betaab Valley. Our driver dropped us outside the park and on our return from the park visit saw him parked (of his own accord) inside the park (close to the river). When we tried to exit the park, some of the locals outside the park locked the gate and demanded Rs 100 to open the gate for us to exit! We firmly told them that we didnt ask for the car to come inside the park and to deal with the driver. After some grumbling, the gates were opened. Am not sure if this is a 'routine' that is operated in collusion with the driver; it appeared to be so.

Chinnu123 > since you are visiting in december end, there are very high chances of snowfall. hiking/trekking is not recommended in this season. also, there are chances that you will see pahalgam covered with snow, may be intermittent! if you encounter clear weather without snowfall in preceding days, may be you can take a pony around few places. enjoy the views!
