Hello all,

Do we have to book the safari in advance? Are there ready tours/ jeep for us at the national park to start the safari right away?

TIA

Hi

You don't have to book safaris in advance . There are plenty of operators near park gates.

How ever if you want to pick you from hotel get hold of a contact at least previous evening ( for morning safari). Otherwise you will have to find transport from your hotel to the park entranc.

Cheers

Any tips on what questions to ask about the jeep? One operator described their vehicle as toyota hilux luxury jeep - price USD145.

Is that good?

that is way too much expensive... Hilux is better than normal jeeps that usually use in safari.. but 145 usd mean more than LKR 21000.. normal jeep is lkr 4000-4500 ....u can find a Hillux for not more than 6000...

I prefer normal jeeps than Hilux because you have a good view....with no roof...no point of using luxury vehicle for safari normal 4*4 is enough for that...

Hi

Their Hilux are normal 4 x 4 cabs modified with elevated seats. 6 seats (two rows @ 3 each.) No Luxury:) than others.

Yes it's way too much for a half a day safari. Still too much for full day safari as well.

Don't prebook safari. You can go to the entrance and negotiate at the rates Raj mentioned.

Only issue is if you want to pick you from the hotel. If it's the case negotiate for a jeep the day before through the hotel or on your own. Usually pickup will be free within 10km

Cheers

Yes thought a lot of money - that's 2 similar quotes I've received now. Will take your great advice and wait till we arrive so we can negotiate something more fair.

I prefer the Hiluxs because they have significantly low engine noises. Some of the older Indian 4WDs are so loud that you can't hear anything but the engine noise.

But yes, the price difference ought to be around Rs.1000.

the hotel quoted us this

Half Day Safari- Morning (4:30am- 10:30 am) or Afternoon (1:30pm-6:45pm)

* Breakfast by the river or on the beach (afternoon Safari, 15 min Rest at the beach)

* Luxury high seated Jeep with a Driver

* Included Entrance tickets

* Included Government Service Charge & other Taxes

the Total Cost of this safari for 4 is $95

is this feasible?
