This was the only day we took a ship's tour as we normally like to explore on our own. However, because of the distance form Gythion we decided to do this and we are so glad we did.
Many people had taken the tour to Mystras the previous day from Monemvasia.Unusually, the ship had offered this tour twice.Fortunately for us we had opted for the second day tour and we were only six people. This meant no big tour group and we could get up close to our excellent guide and hear and see everything clearly.
We drove across the plains of Laconia with our guide giving us a potted history of Sparta and the lives of the inhabitants both then and now.We stopped briefly in the town then proceeded to nearby Mystras, the Byzantine walled town.
This was an absolutely fascinating place, very hot but very uncrowded unlike some ancient sites one visits. We visited several churches to see beautiful frescoes and icons. We were so glad to have such a good guide to tell us about everything. It was just so beautiful and peaceful there and we were loathe to leave.
Once back in Gythion we strolled around by the port and bought olives, olive oil and some very good wine which we drank that evening on board with our dinner.
Thanks to all who answered my questions about Greece. You are all great, giving of your time to answer what must be the same things over and over again.
I don't really know why we haven't explored any of Greece before, usually opting for France or further away destinations. However, our experience of the places we visited and the peope we met was so positive that hopefully we'll return sometime.
