Day trip from Balestrand

We will be in Balestrand September 18 & 19 arriving and leaving by express boat from Flam. We are thinking of a day trip to the Urnes Stave church and possibly the Borgund Stave Church. We may rent a car or hire a taxi for the day. Is this realistic at that time of the year? What would be tithe cost of hiring a taxi for the day?

It appears that most all tourist activities cease by that time of the year. What activities are still operating?

Day trip is realistic. I would rent a car, taxi tariffs are not regulated in Norway and can become surprisingly expensive if you do not negotiate before. Closer stave church is Kaupanger.

Hopperstad stavkyrkje is closest to you from what I know - in Vikøyri on the other side of Sognefjord. Take scenic ferry from Dragsvik (Balestrand) to Vangsnes plus taxi or bus. https://goo.gl/maps/5n6qHwnyFjF2

The #1 attraction nature and landscape is opened 24/7 the full year. Drive scenic route Gaularfjellet which starts in Balestrand. https:/…gaularfjellet

Taxis are metered and fares are regulated to some extent, but you may negotiate a fixed rate. It is likely to be expensive though.

Check the weather for your day out; the scenic drive can be spoiled by cloud obscuring the view at Gaularfjellet. On a clear day it's a spectacular drive; I would choose to go up Gaularfjellet and onwards past the lakes turning right at Moskog to head to Skei. From Skei go towards Sogndal and then back along the Sognefjord from Sogndal to Balestrand, finishing with the short ferry crossing from Hella to Dragsvik near Balestrand. Have a look on Google maps for this route, it has mountain/lake/glacier/fjord scenery.

On a cloudy or wet day the stave church option may be preferred. Kaupanger stave church is at Kaupanger, down a side road off route 5 beyond Sogndal. If you carry on down route 5 you come to the Manheller/Fodnes ferry crossing which will take you onwards down route 5 to Laerdal. Just after laerdal you continue on route 16 to Borgund and the stave church there.

The roads are all good and the driving should be easy, weather permitting. Hope you enjoy your stay.
