Springdale outdoor activities

We are coming next week to hike Zion but we have heard its super hot. We are looking for active things to do besides hiking for the afternoons. We are staying at the Dessert Pearl Inn but the pool will not be entertaining for the entire afternoon/evening.

The Narrows hike is well suited for an afternoon activity. It's in water and the canyon will be cooler than other parts of the park.

Take a drive up Kolob Terrace Rd, it goes through parts of Zion, ends at a beautiful reservoir. The temps are much cooler up there, in 23 miles you gain almost 5000 ft of elevation. If you have a rental car, you can access Lava Pt, just drive carefully, it can be rough.

There are several pullouts for views, one of our favorite areas.

You could do cliff jumping at Sand Hollow State Park - the cliff is about 25 feet - enough to be exciting but not so high to be significantly dangerous.

Driving the scenic Kolob routes in the heat of the afternoon is one of the best options. Kolob Terrace Road as mentioned is one section. Off of Kolob Terrace Road you could hike out towards Northgate Peaks if you find the temps more moderate.

Kolob finger canyons off of I-15 is the other section you can go drive. The Middle Fork of Taylor Creek hike is along a creek and in among some trees.

The state parks near Hurricane/St George are all low in elevation, so will be blistering hot as well. Still, can drive thru or by them

We were just in Zion. We avoided hikes due to the excessive heat. We did the drive up the reservoir, and thought the drive was very pretty and took many photos. However the reservoir is nothing to be excited about. Just so you know ahead of time, there are no restaurants up there and only one little grocery store where you can buy snacks and drinks. Best plan would be to take a picnic.

I'd also suggest driving up to Kolob Canyons - part of Zion but less crowded. Do the Kolob Canyons drive (very pretty) in the morning and then head back down to the reservoir.

Forgot to add - go to grocery store and buy a case of water. Keep it in your car while you are driving around. We are use to the dry heat here in Phoenix but still drank more water than usual .
