Need Help Planning 2013 Yosemite Trip

Am planning a first trip to Yosemite for 4 adults (grandparents, son, daughter-in-law) and 2 year old grandson. Looking at a house/property in West Yosemite for lodging as a full kitchen and larger space wouldbe good for us with the toddler. Our activities will focus on some shorter hikes, seeing the waterfalls, seeing the giant sequoias at Mariposa Grove, taking one of the photography classes/workshops, and riding the tram/bus shuttle to view some of the sites. Some of the adults would also like to raft/ and or kayak. We will not be taking any of the longer or more strenuous hikes. We are flexible on when we can visit and do plan to stay 5 full days. Looking at visiting sometime between mid-May and June 10. Is this a good time for the types of activites I have listed? Any suggestion/comments/advice for a "rookie" Yosemite planner? Thanks!

I think you're right on point. Staying in a cottage or house makes sense in your situation. Yosemite West puts you close enough to both the Valley and the Mariposa Grove to get there without too much driving. You should also plan on visiting Glacier Point, perhaps at sunset; a slightly later stay (early June?) could improve your chances of Glacier Point Road being open.

Renting bikes on one of your days in the valley is also a great idea for pretty much everyone, including the toddler, since they also rent bike trailers.

As far as kayaking is concerned, there is no kayaking within the park, but there are many companies down river of the park, particularly along the Hwy 120 corridor. Be aware that the same conditions that give you full waterfalls also create high white water conditions, and also make the Merced River in the valley too high and fast for rafting.

As for planning, look through the traveler articles here on the Yosemite Forum, and visit the official Yosemite NP website to download one of the "Yosemite Today" newspapers from this year in May or June. It will give you an idea of what to expect the same time next year.

Also, go ahead and make your reservations now. It's not too soon!

You and your family can look forward to a wonderful and memorable vacation!

The raft rentals in the Valley open when the air & water are warm enough and the water level is low enough. It's tough to predict when that will happen, but it's unlikely to be in May. But you might want to go white-water rafting outside the Park. …allaboutrivers.com/California_river_towns/G…

If possible, avoid visiting Yosemite over Memorial Day weekend.

I agree with all of macjack's suggestions, but you can tell she's an old timer (as am I!) The newspaper was renamed Yosemite Guide in 2008. It took me awhile to get used to the new name. Here is the link: nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/guide.htm

One more tip ~ it's a great idea to lurk on other threads and glean useful info. You probably already know that adding your question to their thread is just too confusing, but the ideas offered to them might prompt your own questions on your own thread.

Have you read all the Top Questions & Itineraries in the upper right? We've tried to put the best Articles & Trip Lists up there.

macjack-

Thanks for all the great information. We will add renting bikes to our list - especially since you let us know that bike trailers are available. And we will take your recommendation and make our lodging reservation very soon. Will also look for kayaking companies outside the park. Again, thanks for your suggestions - very helpful!

PacificNWFamily-

Thanks for the link to the Yosemite Guide - lots of great information in the guide about activities and programs in the park. And will avoid Memorial Day weekend. Have read some of the Top Questions/Itineraries and will continue to check those for more ideas, suggestions, etc. Thanks for your comments and help!
