Tenaya Lake camping

Hi guys --- so part of our itinerary involves hike to Cloud's Rest this week. We were considering continuing the hike to setup camp at Tenaya Lake. Is this allowed or possible? Are there spaces ideal for camping beside the lake?

Thank you!

Thank you, but that thread is from over 4 years ago. This may have changed. I'd appreciate a more current update if someone knows the latest. I know Tenaya is a point of interest for many.

What are the camping options near Tenaya Lake?

Nope. No camping at the Lake.

Consult the Park's camping page (prominently displayed on the main page) for all campgrounds and their dates. When is this travel? Tuolumne Meadows is probably the closest.

There is *absolutely* no backpacker camping near the Lake (and you'd be very very visible to a lot of people if you tried it). You have to be 4 miles away from a trail head to camp. I think there are backpacker spaces at TM, though. Also at Yosemite Creek Campground (but that would be a good long hike just to get to it).

BTW, once you exit the trial, your wilderness permit is no longer valid. And if you camp within 4 miles of the trailhead, it's very likely someone will tell the ranger, whose main job is to walk the trails and keep you from doing that (there are some excellent books on this topic, actually and very good reasons for the policy as well).

If anything, things have gotten stricter in the last 4 years. Campgrounds are having shorter seasons, etc.

Thanks!

What about the Sunrise Lakes? Basically we're hoping to camp someplace after summiting Cloud's Rest and near a lake is preferred.

There is camping in a designated area near Sunrise Lakes. You must have a wilderness permit, which you can obtain at the wilderness offic in Yosemite Valley when you arrive. See the complete information here:

https:/…wildpermits.htm

The “full trailheads report” says some days this week are full for reserved sites, but there should still be walk-up permits available. The ranger will help you figure it out.

Are you starting your hike at Tenaya Lake? We did that hike a month ago and it was wonderful. It would have been nice to stop and cam on the way back, but that would have meant hiking up with a full backpack!

Remember that bear canisters are required for all backcountry camping. You can rent them at the wilderness office.

As others have said, unequivocally no camping at Tenaya Lake. In your other thread you learned there's no camping within 4 miles of a trailhead, and since Tenaya Lake is a trailhead (actually more than one) it's clearly off limits.

If you are exiting off of CR northbound, your camping options are:

- About 2 miles from the arête there is a stream crossing, there are established campsites in the woods on your right before you cross the stream (which may not be flowing this time of year)

- About a half-mile further there's a small lake on your left, there's some camping along the southern shore

- Sunrise Lakes - yes you can camp there. There are established campsites at the easternmost (last, from that direction) lake, but you can camp anywhere throughout here following all the other rules. When you go to the Sunrise HSC then you have designated camping only.
