Yosemite fire / alternatives?

Have road trip planned part of which is mammoth lakes via Tioga pass to tenaya lodge and then on to Monterey. Will be at mammoth lakes / tenaya for 08/26/2018 -08/29/2018.

We are concerned that fire situation doesn't appear to be improving. Can anyone tell me:

1. Is route still passable

2. Is it affected by smoke and if so how bad

3. If so can anyone recommend an alternative scenic route from death valley to Monterey

Or are we just worrying unecessarily with a few weeks still to go?

Many thanks

1. Re: Yosemite fire / alternatives?

Its gotten worse....here is the latest forum update to read

For an alternate route to Monterey

Drive to Baker

From Baker, drive I-15 to CA58.

Then drive CA58 to Bakersfield and continue to I-5

On the i-5 drive north to CA46 and drive to Paso Robles

From Paso Robles drive to CA-46 to Cambria

then take highway 1 north through scenic Big Sur area to Monterey

If you do not want to see Big Sur, you can drive 101 north and then take the exit to Monterey.

The northern route is more scenic. Right now you can still get across the Sierra range via 4 or 88 or farther north. You could consider staying in Tahoe or along Hwy 49/Gold Country but I think it's too early to start making changes as a lot can happen in 3+ weeks.

It's too soon to tell. I certainly hope it's not all still shut 3 weeks from now, but stranger things have happened.

Right now smoke is in the Very Unhealthy to Hazardous level along the eastern Sierras

Cant predict what it will be in 3 weeks.

Keep your plans but start looking at alternatives
