We are confused with camping sites and reservations

Hello all! For camping, we booked a spot at Lower Pines at Yosemite for one night. We want to stay two more nights but all the other nights have been booked. We will be traveling to the area for the first time. So, what would be your best suggestion for us to find a spot Thursday morning and Friday morning for the first-come-first-serve camping grounds? Which campground should we try first? I have heard information about the Ranger, but then I have seen some others where we should directly go to the camping ground so we are confused.

When is your trip?

(Keep checking regularly for cancellations.)

Wed 23rd to Sat 26th. We will keep checking for reservations, but if we cannot get one, what would be the best way to find a spot at a first-come-first-serve camping ground?

May, the Thursday before busy Memorial Day Weekend.

If you are in a tent, you (and your whole party) can get up really early and get in line for a shared site in Camp 4. (Ask a ranger on Wednesday when to arrive.... 4-5 am?). At least you'll be able to stay in the same campsite for the next 2 nights.

If you are in an RV, campervan or tent, you could try getting on the Yosemite Campground cancellation waitlist every morning and cross your fingers. (Usually only for a single night). The NPS Campground Office is in the parking lot of Half Dome Village.

I would start looking for Campgrounds outside of Yosemite.
