Christmas in Yellowstone

We are planning a trip to Yellowstone over the Christmas holiday with our college age son. Any suggestions for activities ro which is better place to stay, Mammoth or Old Faithful?

We were there in Sept and it looked to be closing down for end of season. Each location is very isolated so would not expect to much in the line of entertainment. Count on amusing yourselves.

Staying in the park is really a great experience but I would personally stay in the town of West Yellowstone in the Wintertime. If you are looking for activities, their are so many more options for things to do and easy access to the snowmobile trails. You would, however, need a guide if you wanted to snowmobile into the park. Have you contacted Xanterra? They handle the reservations inside of Yellowstone National Park and they have a wonderful website at www.xanterra.com . If you decide to look into reserations in West Yellowstone try www.seeyellowstone.com or www.westyellowstonechamber.com . These have wonderful information on things to do and places to stay in town.

We visit Yellowstone fairly often as we are just from Minnesota. We have stayed at both Old Faithful and Mammoth in the Winter. They are fine but not fancy by any means. One year we stayed in a brand new vacation home on the Yellowstone River north of the Park. I can't recall the exact name of it but know you will find a variety to choose from if you do an internet search for 'yellowstone vacation home or yellowstone vacation rental', etc. We travel a lot and find that vacation homes are often really nice and a better deal than motel/hotel type accommodations. We like the fact that we can cook some of our own food to save some money on that end of things.

What a great way to spend your Christmas Holiday! Yellowstone in Winter is a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Yellowstone! Can I ask what type of activities your family likes to do (snowmobiling, snowcoach rides, cross country skiing, or snow-shoeing?) Depending on what you like could make a difference on where you stay.

Thanks for your reply. We like all the activities you mentioned but our stamina for cross country skiing may be lacking. Our son is in college and we would like something that might have a bit of a thrill involved.

Christmas in Yellowstone is an experience you will never forget. You will be eternally glad that you did this. While there are advantages to staying outside the park, I think the experience of spending Christmas right inside trumps all of them.

The largest difference to consider between Mammoth and Old Faithful is that you can drive to Mammoth, but Old Faithful can only be reached by snowmobile or snow coach. Recent changes in park regulations dictate that all snowmobilers be accompanied by a guide, and that the number of snowmobiles is limited each day.

It sounds like that's the activity you're leaning toward. West Yellowstone is a snowmobile Mecca, and there are tons of rental outfits. I'm not familiar with the rental options from Mammoth, except that I know they exist.

Have a great time.

When you have a minute, take a look at the West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce website. There is a page of different tours for snowmobiles and snowcoaches available. westyellowstonechamber.com/whiteseason/snowc… There is also a page just on snowmobiles. This is a good starting point. Many of the larger hotels in West Yellowstone offer packages (combining snowmobiling and/or snowcoach tours with lodging to save money) such as Three Bear Lodge, Day's Inn, Branding Iron Inn, Holiday Inn, etc.
