Maunawili Falls on the windward side of the island, behind Kailua/Lanikai is probably your best bet. A fantastic, brief hike (about a mile and a half) through the dense jungle to a verrrrry Hawaiian falls with pool.

You expect a dinosaur will come charging out of the growth at any time.

It is a relatively newly improved trail and parking area, so it gets a lot more crowded on occasion then when it was basically unknown to most except locals. See:

Waimea Falls is also a great falls and pool, and fantastically landscaped. For 30 years it was Waimea Falls Park, a kind of commercial amusement park/destination exhibit, which has seince closed. The valley is now owned by the City & County and run by the Auduban Society.

There is a minor admission fee to walk the paved trails through the lower valley gardes up to the falls. For pictures from a now-outdated website see:

hawaiiweb.com/html/waimea_valley_adventure_p…

Check-out the first website listed for reviews on other hikes. Many waterfalls are on private conservation lands and are not accessible by the general public.

Or, in the case of Sacred Falls, the best jungle valley/falls experience on Oahu (and maybe the State), the trails are closed at present.

The Manoa Falls are a gorgeous sight. There are posted signs that prohibit entering the pool under the falls due to the unstable natureo of the falls.

Waterfalls are a beautiful sight but swiming under them has its risks. Sometimes rocks are caught up in the downfall. Also, the water frequently contains a biological organism called leptospirosis. You clearly don't want to pick that up through drinking or a cut in your skin. You can caught on mosquitoes being present in a rain forest.

Be careful!

thanks for the info amberloo *takes notes for next visit*

YES, as RockyMountain told you, mosquitoes and rainforest go hand in hand. Find yourself some good repellant and apply it before you start and after you swim (if you swim).
