Newport in the Rain?

My husband and I are driving up to Newport this Wednesday. Looked at the 10 day forecast - not great - rain, rain, rain every day is expected.

We pretty much know that seeing the mansions and other homes could keep us very busy for at least a couple of days. But, what else might be good to do if the weather is uncooperative? We love to shop - love art galleries, antiques, crafts, etc. But, how many days can you shop? Plus, we're driving up in a convertible with a relatively tiny trunk, so we'll be limited to what we can bring back with us LOL.

Any other suggestions to keep us busy (no funny answers - we know the obvious one someone is bound to say LOL). Closest movie theaters, good/interesting shopping and indoor sightseeing? Any day spas in the area (we both enjoy that).

Thanks!

BTW - for all of you who helped me with my dinner choices - we did cancel Black Pearl and are going to West Deck that night instead. But, we're going to make a point of going to BP for a lunch since the chowder is so highly touted :-)

There is an interesting choice of train rides from the station by the visitor center . 1PM 3PM 6PM . There is a dinner cruise that is undercover . Get an umbrella and a waterproof camera ( even a disposable) and take photos in the rain ( They are ofen more interesting ! ) There is an antique center over by commecial wharf . There are a couple of local theatre groups . The one by Rocco's doing the "Cemetary " is supposed to be good . Marriot off America's Cup has a day spa . Tennis Hall of Fame is interesting if you are into tennis .

Also Foxwoods can kill 24 hrs easily ! 8 miles noth on Rt. 2 off I95 Exit 92 . Forget about The Newport Grand , it is like a large Vegas 7-11 store . No table Games .No free drinks . Borderline entertainment on weekends .

Thanks Allure, I didn't realize Foxwoods was so close by. I easily could spend a lot of time there, not my husband so much tho LOL.

Good tips tho and we'll check out the train for sure. Plus, we don't totally mind the rain and I agree that photos taken in bad weather sometimes make great shots if done right.

Yeah, the weather's going to be crummy they say until Sunday. But I'm sure you can find things to do in the rain.

FYI -- It's going to take you over an hour from Newport to get to Foxwoods. If that's something that interests you, you might want to try the Mohegan Sun (15 minutes from Foxwoods, and a better experience, in my book). The Mohegans also own the Norwich Inn and Spa about 10 minutes away from the casino.

The train that was mentioned is the Newport Dinner Train. I think they have their own website for more info. For movies in the Newport area, try the Jane Pickens movie theater -- they show some interesting films -- not first runs. There are also winery tours in the area, and assorted fall festivals that may be going on.

Have you looked at the gonewport.com website to see what's going on this week?

There's the Boewen's Seafood Festival on Saturday - hopefully that will be worth going to. Not much else unfortunately for this week. But, it's ok, I really think seeing all the mansions and historic homes will keep us relatively busy - combined with meals, and a nap daily LOL.

Thanks again! I'm going to check out the 2nd run movies you mentioned.

Jane Pickens movie theater is a nice experience in Newport. The theatre itself is an old art house type of theatre and they run artsy type of films. Taking a drive down Ocean drive and watching the waves crashing at Brenton Point State Park is always wonderful. Sometimes the rain brings rough surf and just watching the waves crashing in the rain can be very romantic. The winery tours are always fun. I think you will have pelnty to do. Exploring the town should keep you busy. Have fun. Don't forget to leave time to relax.
