Is the whale museum worth the time to spend?
That's really up to you.
Some folks think it's worth it, that's why it's still there.
Some folks think it isn't worth it and do other things.
Are you "in" to whales and whaling history?
Yes, absolutely. There is more to it than just whaling. I visited just last month and was so impressed by this museum. They have a terrific knot collection done by Clifford Ashley. There is a beautiful scrimshaw collection. A scale model whaling ship, which is impressive. There is history of local manufacturing. Also, one of our newspaper photographers has a display there with some truly world class photos. The roof deck is worth the price of admission alone. Be sure you go up there and take in the glorious view. If you are going today you will be able to see clear out to the Islands. Your admission also includes a visit to Seamens Bethel and the Mariners House across the street. The Bethel is worth a peek. There are a lot of awesome restaurants downtown. DNB Burger is fantastic. Freestone's is really good. If you want Mexican food with a casual atmosphere go to No Probs. Pizza is terrific at Brick Pizzeria. There are also a couple of breweries down there. Love the beer at Moby Dick but not so much the food. The Rose Alley Pub has music, usually starting at 3:00pm, on Saturdays. My friends acoustic band is playing on the roof deck at Slainte this afternoon as well. All these places are within walking distance of the museum. Yes, come to New Bedford and spend the day. Enjoy!
Could not have said it any better than Msia52! Spot on!
