Best time to visit in relation to weather and crowds

We've decided on the BIg Island as our BVI anniversary trip was cancelled because of the Hurricanes. I've researched weather focusing mainly on rain not so much on temps. We plan on spending a week in Kohala and a few days in Volcano. Looks like the lowest rainfall months are in the spring April ,May and June. We love to snorkel and hike. Would avoid Easter break. Any suggestions?

We always go in May. The weather is perfect and kids are still in school, so low crowds. The weather is always great on the Kohala coast rather than Kailua-Kona.

Merry Monarch is always held after Easter. It happens in Hilo.

So you may want to avoid that first week after Easter as well. Places book up pretty solid that week as well, so it is good that you are avoiding Easter.

Do checkout VRBO for places in Volcano Village. Seeing the glow from the crater at night is a great experience.

We’ve been several times in late May - early June, staying in condos within the Mauna Lani Resort property, and have never found it overly busy or crowded. Rates are typically lower then too. With two of the State’s best snorkeling beaches, the Mauna Lani property would likely be a good choice for you.

As for the Kohala Coast, it almost doesn't really matter because this area typically has warm, summer like weather year round. Sort of the Palm Springs of Hawaii. Go with price and your schedule.

As for the volcano area, you don't go for the weather anyway. Year round it can be cool and rainy. Even in August you can leave the Kohala Coast in 90 degree weather only to find the park cool and wet. I'd almost compare it to a trip to Ireland, go expecting cool, wet weather and if it turns out nice it's just an added bonus.

IMO should be good there almost anytime---dry & little rain. Very very sad about BVI & islands. Hope they all come back better than before. Enjoy Hawaii!

I'm another vote for late May early June. June is the driest month in Hilo, although it still might rain. Volcano has a better chance of clear skies then than earlier in year, which is nice for hiking.

October weather can be nice too.

Another vote too for Mauna Lani.

Well, even though weather wise it doesn't really matter when you stay on the Kohala Coast (the main difference between winter and summer is highs of 85 or 90? :-), ocean conditions vary wildly and you definitely want to avoid about November - April if you want to maximize your odds of flat, warm ocean. Late May to early June is an excellent choice.

Agree you don't go to Volcano for the weather, lol. You'll usually fine pretty pleasant temperatures at the lower elevations of VNP in summer but even in May, it can be cold and wet at night in particular, so look for some lodging with a decent heating source (I prefer woodstoves or fireplaces to baseboard heaters).

Since you also asked about crowds, just to reiterate, it’ never been busy the several times we’ve stayed on the Kohala Coast in late May - early June. The only time we’ve seen fewer people there was when we visited in early December.

We have gone twice now in October (after Ironman has ended) and have been happy.

Been twice for the last two weeks in September including this year

No crowds and easy to get into most places.

Weather was pretty much perfect for the entire two weeks.
