Are there any self guided plantations? We have a few hours before flights and just would like to visit or look at. Or maybe a park? Any suggestions would help. Tia
Destrehan is very close to the airport, and while they do offer tours I'm not sure it's absolutely necessary because you are encouraged to wander through many of the buildings on your own. The tour was just a part of our visit.
You could also go to City Park, there's a lot there, we've only been to the sculpture garden which was fun.
City Park is glorious to spend some time in - lots to do including the art but it's perfectly enjoyable to just wander around in.
Most plantations themselves are an hour or so's drive from New Orleans itself and most have proper tours. Oak Alley though has beautiful grounds that can be explored on your own - the tour goes into the house but you can skip it entirely. Because of your timings though, the plantations will not be doable and I would instead spend the time in City Park :) There is the very lovely Audobon park as well, but City Park is my favourite.
We always relied on DIY tours, though with many, did the “on-property tour,” and just did the driving ourselves. Now, we lived in NOLA, so it was an easy jaunt to each.
Back then, Destrehan was not really open to the public, and must admit that we have not visited recently.
Not sure of your travel day, or timing, but lunch there, with time in the Park (Bestoff Sculpture Garden is lovely), but you might work in a “twofer?”

Best of luck, and travel safely,
Also depends on the time of year. If you mean very soon or in a few days, you would need something indoors. We are breaking heat records. 98 degrees today with "feels like" temp at 106. It is unbearable right now to be outside more than a few minutes. Hopefully this will change by the end of September.
What's a "few hours"? You may find yourself with just enough time to drive around the qtr or city park.
