As far as public transport is concerned, it's a couple of blocks from the Flushing Avenue Station of the J or M train, sometime the J runs express and skips the station. The M on weekdays goes right through the center of Manhattan along 6th Avenue and connects to every other line.

On weekends the M and J both stop and can connect to other trains, the J connects with everything else at a couple of Manhattan stations, but does not leave the Wall Street District.

The easiest and most popular transfer at night and weekends is from the F train. But the 4, 5, A, C, all connect to the evening J train. Here is a schedule of your two trains:

And a subway map: your train is in the middle somewhere (where there are brown and orange lines together): http://web.mta.info/nyct/maps/subway_map.pdf

It's not the most convenient location, but if the price is right it's easy (but not the easiest way) to get into the famous parts of NYC.

It's not the fanciest part of New York, but not bad, just working class, mostly.

Here the rule for what stops at Flushing Avenue: M from 6th Avenue, all weekday and evenings during the week; J from Financial District nights and weekends. M from Delancey St, weekends except late nights.

This service guide has much more than what you need, but focus on the section for the J (brown) and M (orange): http://web.mta.info/maps/service_guide.pdf

Great rundown on transportation from NorthofDC. It’s also an easy walk to the L train, which goes through Williamsburg and then across 14th St in Manhattan. (The L will be shutting down for extensive repair work in 2019, though.)

As for the neighborhood...it’s not my regular stomping grounds, but I enjoy going there. The long-time residents are largely working class & Latino, with a big influx of young people (recent college grads, creative types) in recent years. The hotel is just off Flushing Av, a formerly industrial/warehouse street that still tends gritty in parts, but becomes more gentrified/hipsterfied on the other side of Bushwick Av before exploding into a full-fledged hipster Fantasia around Bogart St. If you continue walking along it toward Jefferson St, you’ll find yourself surrounded by incredible street art - really, it’s like an outdoor gallery - and tons of cafes, bars, restaurants, etc. Maria Hernandez Park is a nice place to sit and relax and watch the world go by.
