Spending one night in Jacksonville

We are driving from up north and will be getting into Jacksonville mid afternoon. The next morning we will be heading to Orlando. Any particular place to stay (safe) with some cheap attractions for that evening?

The airport area at Exit 363 from Interstate 95 has multiple inexpensive hotels. Stop at the Welcome Center a mile or two south of the Florida/Georgia state line and pick up a hotel book with coupons for reduced hotel rates. The airport area is 20 minutes north of downtown with The Landing on the river which has bars, restaurants, and great views.

Or drive 30 miles south of Jacksonville and stay in Saint Augustine which is a major tourist destination with lots of things to see and do.

There is road construction on Interstate 95 in downtown Jacksonville and it is a mess. The next exit south of Exit 363 should be for Interstate 295, a bypass (ring road) that will allow you to avoid the road construction and connect with Interstate 95 on the south side of town. To get on I-295 going the right direction, follow the sign for the "Beaches".. The road work will probably be going on for more than a year!

Hi there,

Although I don't want to steer you away from Jacksonville, if you haven't been to St. Augustine, our nation's oldest city, that's a great suggestion and would be a wonderful place to stay for the afternoon and evening. There are great restaurants and it's a quaint "European style" city. It's only about 45 minutes further than Jacksonville. There's a forum here on Tripadvisor with some good info about B&Bs (they have some great ones), restaurants and things to do.

Alternatively, if you do stay in Jacksonville, the airport area for accommodations is a good idea. Depending on when you arrive, you may want to visit our award-winning Zoo and Gardens, which is only about 10-15 minutes from the airport hotels. Depending on weather, you also may want to kick around at the beaches area - good restaurants and shops. Let us know if you need more info on that - Spirit (who answered you above) is the expert on that area.

Have a great trip!

Vicki
