Bronx Zoo

Hi

We are staying in the Grand Hyatt next to the Grand Central Station in July, what is the best way to get to the Bronx Zoo, is there a direct line that goes from Grand Central to the zoo and is it worth it?

The BxM11 bus runs up Madison Avenue (a block from the hotel) and drops you at the zoo gate. It's an express bus, so it costs $5/person and requires a pay-per-ride Metrocard, rather than an unlimited card.

Alternatively, you can take the #5 subway line from Grand Central to the East Tremont/West Farms Square stop, then walk a few blocks to the zoo gates.

Crans

Do you need the card or can you pay cash to the driver?

We're going late June/Early July and the zoo is on our itnerary. We opted for the bus as we may get to see more whilst travelling and were looking to just pay as we got on the bus as opposed to getting the travel cards.

Thanks,

Leeds

I'm pretty sure that express buses do not accept dollar bills, so you'd need all of the money in coins, which is a huge hassle -- much easier to buy the pay-per-ride Metrocard if you plan on using the express bus.

You can also take MetroNorth grom Grand Central to Fordham, and then the Bx9 bus. MetroNorth and the Bronx Zoo have a package deal with discounted train fare and discounted admission:

You can buy the pay per ride Metrocard in any subway station, so just do that before you're going on your trip to the Bronx Zoo. Remember, there's a 15% bonus on pay per ride Metrocards over $8.00, and several people can share a pay per ride card (but NOT an unlimited card.)

The current express bus fare is $5.50, according to the MTA website. Here's the URL for the BxM11 timetable:

I would definitely take #5 train to and from--- and if you are here more that 4 days get an unlimited metro pass and it will cost you no more to get there.

I am not a big Zoo person but the Bronx Zoo is one you should not miss.

And just an FYI: On Wednesdays, the zoo is pay-what-you-wish.

Hi again

Thanks for all the advice on how to get to the Zoo. looks like the bus might be the best bet and as pointed out there is a good chance of seeing more of the city. How long does the bus take, compared to the #5 train?

Thanks again.

It's about a 30-35-minute ride either way. If you take the bus, make sure you have enough money on your Metrocard to get back :) There are no machines to put more money on it at the zoo stop.

On the way back, the bus goes down Fifth Avenue past Central Park, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's, etc.
