Country resorts near NYC

I guess it's my turn to ask questions rather than attempt to answer them.

Does anyone know of any nice places outside of New York (max 3 hour drive) to go for a weekend? I'm thinking a nice resort type of hotel, that's not uber-fancy, for some R&R in the mountains/woods/not on pavement.

Thanks!

I highly recommend Montauk in the late srping through the autumn, but not in the winter.

The Finger Lakes area is great, but I think that's a 4 or 5 hour drive.

rca - this is one of my favorite places anywhere. La Duchesse Anne in Mt. Tremper (near Woodstock - in the Catskills). Quaint rooms, fantastic location and one of the great country French dining experiences anywhere. I recommend this very highly.

rca - almost forgot - the other place I highly recommend is the Mohonk Mountain House outside of New Paltz - the East Coast version of Lake Tahoe ;-)

How about the area north of the (dreaded) Woodbury Common mall? Search these towns:

Ellenville

Mountainville

Highland Mills

What about New Paltz?

This website should give you some ideas:

While I would not call the Bear Mountain Inn a resort, if you want the woodsy experience, then this could be in the running. http://www.bearmountaininn.com There are plenty of grounds and you could hike up the mountain if you like and enough interesting places like West Point to take your mind off the streets of the city.

Monhonk Mountain House is a true resort although I'm not a fan. There are the casino places in Ct. like Mohegan Sun and ofcourse there's Atlantic City. Lenox, Mass. is a nice town and has a nice spa (con't remember the name).

If you're just looking for a weekend away in the country, there are plenty of inns and b and bs in all directions. Have a look at the Weathervane Inn upstate.

weathervaneinn.com

Also Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck, the New Hope, PA /Lamberville, NJ -a charming area with lots of history, antiquing, inns...

Cape May, NJ with Victorian inns

The Rockefeller Estate, Kykuit is wonderful. Can't remember when it closes.

Have a look on the website escapemaker.com for other options.
