Graduation Dinner

Hello--Our family is coming to NYC to celebrate our daughter's Master's Degree at the end of May. Looking for a restaurant that is nice, conversation friendly but not over the top $$$. We are taking her and 10 friends out for dinner/party on Friday, but would like to do a nice family dinner on Thursday. Doing Italian on Friday and she doesn't care for Indian, Thai or sushi. Any thoughts? Any opinions on Central Park Boathouse? All suggestions appreciated!

The Central Park Boathouse is nice, but imo it's nicer during the day, when you can see the view, than at night.

What is your daughter's favorite food? And what does "not over the top $$$" mean to you in real numbers? That is, what is your budget/person?

So you're looking for a place for the family dinner on Thurs? How many will there be? From where is she graduating (trying to get an idea of where she's lived and what she may already know).

To clarify the above request. Not over the top $$$--Nothing like Le Cirque or WD50. There will be 4 of us and I'd like to stay around $400 but something with "atmosphere". She likes traditional American the best, maybe French bistro. We're staying Midtown East, graduation is at Radio City and she lives near Union Sq/Stuy Town. Hope this helps

Balthazar is the quintessential bistro:

Minetta Tavern, the new restaurant from the same people, is a restored NYC classic that's eye-poppingly gorgeous, but it's one of the hottest tables in town right now, so it could be hard to get a reservation:

I'm still not sure if this meal is before/after the actual graduation and you're wanting something near Radio City or in midtown east near your hotel or if it doesn't matter.

21club.com

is quintessential NYC and near Radio City. Men must wear jacket and tie for dinner. The downstairs barroom has more atmosphere but the dining room upstairs might feel more special. Not the best food in NYC but I think a memorable place and they know how to do a celebration. You can get a free cocktail if you book a table online. www.21club.com/web/onyc/comp_cocktail.jsp

The Modern inside MOMA is also near Radio City. Food considered excellent. Cafe des Artistes near Lincoln Center is a lovely French restaurant that makes for a good celebration.

Union Square Cafe. Often in the top ten of NYC restaurants.
