In case anyone knows about these hotels: Homewood Suites Mission Valley/Zoo vs. SpringHill Suites Downtown.

Trying to choose where to stay for 2 adults, 1 child for 3 nights. Have a car. The cost is pretty much the same all things included (parking, room cost, etc.)

Plan to spend one day in San Diego itself and 2 exploring La Jolla and other places around San Diego.

Stay downtown. You'll potentially have a view of the bay and you'll be in walking distance of the waterfront and lots of restaurants. Also the Midway and the historic ships at the Maritime Museum if those are of interest.

In Mission Valley (which is not near the zoo) you'll have freeway noise from two sides. You could walk to Benihana, but that's about it.

Not even close.... the SpringHill Suites Bayfront is the easy choice. It is a much better location with lots around it.

PS La Jolla is a neighborhood in the City of San Diego. It would be like saying, "we plan to spend one day in NYC itself and 2 exploring Manhattan".

I will have a car and there are lots of restaurants within a 5 min drive with ample parking, unlike Downtown. Seems that the Gaslamp district is a long walk from SpringHill suites. Also, wanted to get some feedback about the quality of accommodation also. Seems that the rooms in Homewood Suites are bigger.

Understood. I just thought that in case of traffic it's better to be in the Mission Valley area if we want to spend a couple of days north of San Diego Downtown (i.e., La Jolla, Free Flight in Del Mar, etc.)

Not really. It might take you 3-5 minutes longer from Downtown than Mission Valley.

What map are you looking at? The Gaslamp District starts just across the street from Springhill Suites. The bay front is far superior to the neighborhood around the Homewood Suites you are contemplating. And if you already have had your thumb on the scale in favor of the latter, why even bother to ask? So much more interesting along the bay front….and not just for meals.

Its not just across the street, but its not a long walk either, its a quick easy walk. With that said with a child there isnt really any reason to go to the Gaslamp which is more of nightlife area for adults, although there are a few good restaurants. You are right on the edge of Little Italy which has the best collection of restaurants in one spot in the County and there are many other great restaurant options along the Bayfront both very casual to higher end.

The SpringHill Suites in in the Columbia (bay front) neighborhood of DT San Diego. You don't need to drive anyplace. You can walk to Little Italy for great dining. There is very little in the Gaslamp that I'd call great dining, but it is a short walk from the SpringHill Suites.

The Homewood Suites is a nice hotel in a miserable location along an interstate highway.
