Probably the most economical way would be BART. From SFO take BART under the bay to either 12th Street Oakland or Lake Merritt stations. They are both close to Alameda. I would then try to take a taxi from one of these stations to your destination in Alameda.

I am not sure where the taxis hang out near these stations since I haven't paid attention, but I would imagine some would be nearby. The Marriott Hotel on around 10th and Broadway seems like it might be a good candidate for finding a taxi near the 12th St station. You could always call for one, if needed.

BART Fare will be $8.40 each to Oakland. I imagine the taxi will be about $10-$20, so probably a total cost of $25-$35 for the two of you.

There is an AC Transit bus that goes to Alameda (#51) but it doesn't go too many places on the island so it might not go anywhere near your destination and I'm not sure how fun hauling luggage onto the bus would be.

Central Avenue traverses pretty much all of Alameda from west to east. Some portions of Central have a bus line running directly on it, others on parallel streets, and there's also several points where transit lines cross Central. Consequently you'll need to be a bit more explicit, i.e. provide cross streets or continue to fumble in the dark.

If your destination is on Central Ave. somewhere between Webster st. and Broadway, line 51 stops within a block of it. You shouldn't have any problem taking luggage on the bus if you're not going in rush hour. If you're going west of Webster or east of Broadway you should let us know.
