Lavender Festival

We are planning a trip to Banff and are driving from Banff to Seattle for flight out of Seattle. We will have5- 6 days before our flight. We have been to Vancouver, Victoria and Seattle before but could return for another visit since we love the area. We are interested in seeing the lavender fields around Sequim and will be in the area around the time of the festival. We are concerned that the festival will be so crowded that we may not enjoy it. We plan to call the Chamber to see if any of the lavender fields are open for touring before the festival (around July 13-or 14). We would appreciate advice on other activities in the Sequim area. We have been to the ONP several years ago so probably would not want to repeat that in the limited time that we have. We love the ocean so suggestions for a beach visit would be good. Also where would be good alternate lodging if the Sequim area is booked? Thanks for the help

The Pacific beaches are in ONP. However, the Dungeness Spit, on the Straits of Juan de Fuca, offers a beautiful walk to a lighthouse. It is located in Sequim. This is the only other activity besides lavender viewing that Sequim offers. It's a really boring town, although it has at least one excellent restaurant and two terrific bakeries. You could spend some time amid the Victorian architecture in Port Townsend; it is only about 45 minutes from Sequim.

There are no good lodging alternatives to Sequim during the Lavender Festival. Everything in Port Angeles and Sequim fills up, and there is no other nearby town. PT is a bit too far.

Call the farms to see if you could visit the week before. I would be surprised if they weren't delighted to see you.

There is a serious political fracas going on this year over the Lavender Festival, and the dust has yet to settle. The festival organizers split from a group of lavender farmers, and now there are two groups fighting it out over the shape of the festival. It is not clear what all this means for tours, street closures, and activities. I'm sure there will be a festival this summer, but it may be different from previous festivals.

Thank you for that information. It is always good to get some prespective from a local. Howa far would the beach in ONP be from Port Townsend? Would it be a good base to tour the lavender fields for one day and the next day get a ferry to the San Juan Islands and/or Victoria from there?

Pt. Townsend is 2 hours and 30 minutes from "the beach" in ONP. There is no "the beach" in ONP. There are beaches. I imagine you would want to see Rialto Beach in LaPush since you are not hikers. You can drive right to Rialto Beach, but Pt. Townsend is way too far to act as a base. Port Angeles or Forks would be acceptable bases. Rialto Beach is 1 hour and 15 minutes west of PA and about 20 to 25 minutes from Forks.

As I said, the only beach near Sequim is the Dungeness Spit. It is beautiful in its own way, but it is on the Straits, not the ocean, so it has no tide pools or sea stacks.

The Victoria ferry leaves from Port Angeles. There are various ways to get to the San Juans. The Anacortes ferry is probably the best, although you could get there via Victoria, but it will be a long, circuitous trip. Either way, you will shoot most of a day getting to the San Juans. Post on the San Juans forum for advice.

Whatever you decide, start booking lodging soon. The best places in Sequim and PA fill quickly for this time of year.

More on Lavender. There are now two lavender festivals, but for visitors this just means more to do. The Festival that features the classic Farm Tour that has made Sequim famous is our event, the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire - www.sequimlavenderfarms.org. Many people do avoid the crowds and come the week before or after the actual festival. This year the week of the festival or after would probably be best for lavender viewing. All the farms are open during the summer, we will have a summer guide on our website next week. While there are a lot of people, our 6 farms on tour are not that crowded as everyone spreads out and we have a good transportation system and lots of parking. Our new venue "Lavender if the Park" at Carrie Blake Park will be a very special experience with lavender, food, crafts, music and more, all in a park setting.

Once you are off HWY 101 driving is not much of a problem. It is summer and ferries do backup a lot so it is best to avoid the ferries to Seattle on the weekend.

There is not much lodging in Port Townsend and the tourist area is a very touristy area, Port Angeles would make a good base of operations. It also has some excellent restaurants and has the Victoria Ferry and gateway to ONP.

You can get reservation now in Sequim, don't just wait until the last minute. The Holiday Inn Express and Quality Inn would be our only recommendations in Sequim. There is more variety and often better prices in Port Angeles which is only 20 minutes away. The ferry departs from there and a day-trip or overnight to Victoria is awesome. You do need a passport or enhanced drivers license now. From Port Angeles, the drive up to Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park is amazing, about a 45 minute drive.

Hope this helps. the Olympic Peninsula and the field of lavender make for a great destination trip. Scott Nagel, Executive Director, Sequim Lavender Farmers Association.

Scott,

Thank you for your information. A trip to your lavender farm and others in the area are what we were looking for .I will watch for your updates. We have a reservation at the Sequim Inn which was the 800 number for the Holiday Inn express. I hope it is the same hotel that you are recommending.

The street festival will be downtown on Fir Street over Sequim Lavender Weekend. Here's a helpful link to a map of the lavender farms that will have farm stores and events open to the public over the summer: walavender.com/uploads/150608_SLFABrochure_l…
