Is a cruise worth it?

There's a group of 4 of us going to NZ in Feb 2013 and whilst browsing for things to do and get involved with we have come across some cruises in the Bay of Islands.

They look great but we are just wondering if it's well worth the money. We have come across 2 that seem to include lots of activities in the price.

Is there anyone out there that can give us a review for either of them?

Or are we better off just spending a night or 2 in the area in our already booked campervan?

All responses and suggestions appreciated greatly, thank you :)

there are many more options to explore the bay of islands other than the two you have identified.

if you do a cruise which includes the 'hole in the rock' then you will get to see about 75% of the bay.

by staying in your camper you will see maybe 5% of the bay.

you could alos consider a fishing trip, a dive trip, an overnight trip on the new 'Ipirir' owned by Great sights, even take a ferry across to Russel and do some short walks, or even a high speed ride to the hole in the rock andback again in less than half a day

worth it and worth it can have so many facets. comparing by price or comparing your whole NZ experience with Bay of island included or excluded.

There is no doubt in my view that the Bay of Islands is best experienced from the water. However if you did not want a full blown cruise there are plenty of other options. Have a look at:

A cruise to the Hole in the Rock only takes half a day and is well worth it. We were fortunate enough to see heaps of dolphins, a humpback whale and a pod of orcas. You also have the option of swimming with the dolphins. Another great activity is kayaking up the Waitangi River to Haruru Falls and then to one of the nearby islands in the Bay. You'll have a great experience if you get out on the water. It doesn't necessarily need to be overnight. And as Coaster suggested, take a ferry trip to Russell, New Zealand's first capital, and climb Flagstaff Hill for fantastic views of the area. Very historic region as well as stunning scenery.

Thanks guys, I've made my mind up now - we're going to book :)

I really hope we are lucky enough to come across a pod of Orcas!

Thanks again :)
