Martigny to Orsieres

Can anyone please advise me on the best way to get from Martigny to Orsieres by public transport. Bus? Train? How frequent are the services?

Thanking you in anticipation,

Melbourne Dinsdale.

BTW has anyone heard anything about the Alpes and Rhone hotel? The reviews are quite old. The walking company we are with uses the hotel and we are considering staying an extra night in Martigny but not if our hotel is going to be dodgy.

The train service Martigny to Orsières is about once an hour. Some erratic as far as the minutes/past the hour goes so you need to check carefully for trains.

I assume you mean the Hotel Alpes and Rhône here in Martigny? It is an OK 3 star. Nothing fancy. I would not eat there (aside from breakfast). It is extremely well located for the centre of town - a very short walk from the Place Centrale - and also only about 5-8 mins walk to the Fondation Gianadda (world class art museum with lovely sculpture garden). Here is a link to sightseeing in Martigny which might be useful to you.

There are better hotels - The Forum (but close to Martigny Bourg not the Place Centrale) and the Vattel which is the other side of the station. Also the Martigny Boutique Hotel which is also the other side of the station. The Vattel is 4 star and good - it is also a hotel school so they have to be! I encourage you to spend an extra night here as there is a LOT to see and do and Martigny is a really lovely small town with a long history (Roman, originally) but not perhaps at the Alpes & Rhône though if you have been staying in mountain huts that will seem not so bad!

BTW - there is a seriously great restaurant in Orsières - the Hôtel des Alpes. It is arguably the best restaurant in the entire canton and very likely in this part of Switzerland. 17/20 in the Gault Millau and 1 Michelin star. They do a lunch menu there for 80frs - 3 courses with choices - which is superb! Open Thurs-Mon and reservations are not a bad idea.

Thanks so much Hambagahle. Unfortunately we are tied to the hotel with the walking company we are using but it sounds like the hotel is ok. We are staying two nights in Martigny (maybe catch the Mt Blanc Express) and then spending a night at Orsieres where we intend to go to the Restaurant les Alpes to celebrate our anniversary.

Happy for any other suggestions on things to do in Martigny and Orsieres.

Cheers, Diny.

There is a lovely restaurant on the Place Centrale - la Vache qui Vole. Has a nice terrace if the weather is good. Otherwise I would start with the Giannada, see the Picasso exhibition which is amazing, the sculpture garden and the vintage cars (if you like them) and move on to the Dog Museum. The restaurant there is not bad for a light lunch. Start the "Roman walk" at the amphotheatre next to the Dog Museum. Cross the old Roman road (Rome to London) and see the Tepidarium near the Gianadda parking. Then follow the signs to the old baths. Don't miss popping into the Protestant chapel nearby to see the windows. And end up at the Bâtiaz castle. There is a great walk through the vinyards to Plan Cerisier OR along the Dranse river from the foot of the Bàtiaz to Martigny Bourg, part of which is at the foot of the vineyards.

Martigny is a lovely town!

Hello,

We are arriving in Martigny on a Saturday (15 July) and wish to go straight up to see the dogs and the monsatry at St Bernards pass - then get the bus back to Osieres to stay the night (then walking to Chamonix)

Given its a saturday and the time of year should I buy/book in advance (can i?)

Thank you.

You might also want to visit the museum of St Barnard dogs - Barryland - here in Martigny first.

You cannot book post buses in advance. There are only two buses on Saturdays - they leave Orsières station at 0900 and 1400. From Martigny there is a train to Orsières with one change in Sembrancher. The last bus of the day leaves the Hospice at 1620.
