Medication whilst on holiday

Good evening,

Could anyone offer any advice regarding the following please ?

We are visiting in three months time and a party member has just undergone an operation and although well and able, could still be on IV antibiotics administered daily . In the event of this being so, are there facilities available probably through an English medical centre I guess to be able to receive this medication ?

Yes I know the obvious answer is to ask the hospital's advice but as it is somewhat in the future, they will not be committal since the problem may not arise. Just thought I would do some homework before the deadline for payment with Thomas cook.

Many thanks in anticipation.

This is one you really need specialist advice on. And I would have thought the cost would be huge. EHIC only cover emergency treatment, travel insurance probably won't cover it as you knew it was needed before leaving, so you really need to look into this carefully

Hiya, thanks for a quick response. Yep, have considered the insurance and EHIC part of it and fully agree.

To give a bit more info, if the situation does arise, it would be more like a district nurse type of thing. One option is that my wife is a qualified nurse and could administer the meds if we are allowed to travel with it or would be willing to pay for the facility.

It's just a pain to get an answer here , not because it is a no no more I think that they don't know !

As I said before, you need the advice of the hospital. I'm not sure what the NICE guidelines are on relatives administering IV antibiotics either. And if your wife is employed, what her contract of employment would say about it. TA is really not the place to be relying on answers to this question.

As a nurse myself I something I would put myself forward to administer iv antibiotics to a friend. I would suggest that if your wife wanted to.do this that she should ask for advice from her employer. Any one can have a sudden anaphylaxis.
