outside of Porto

We are looking for a small/medium size town to base ourselves in while visiting the Porto area. We may have a car. Searching for a centrally located town that we will make our daily excursions from. But is a real community where the citizens walk about before the dinner hour near a town square, where also are located resturants etc.

Thanks you

Via Nova de Gaia would not I think be suitable. With a population of almost 180,000 it is not a small town, effectively it's a southern suburb of Porto.

If you are planning excursions into the city of Porto, you should forget about car and base yourselves somewhere with metro or train service.

If planning excursions elsewhere, it will help to know roughly where you plan to go and how long you are prepared to drive.

Thanks, we are spending 2 weeks from Algarve to Porto flying into and out of Lisbon. Considering 3-4 nights in Porto area. We'll have the car before and after Porto so as to stop many places as we move across this portion of Portugal. Also posted this same question in Porto Forum.
