Accommodation in villages

Accommodation in villages

We will arrive in Naxos in early June and like the idea of exploring the island by car and or bus, stopping in small villages and soaking up the local life. Is it feasible to arrive at a village and find accommodation, without booking? Any advice on how to do this would be much appreciated. The booking centres seem to concentrate on Chora and the beaches, and there are few listings in villages.

I know there are opportunities in Halki, Filoti and in Koronos.

For Koronos look up this:

For Halki I only know this photo (courtesy Perigahre):

and this in Filoti (also courtesy Perigahre):

Thanks for the feedback greek-traveller, we will study these links! We particularly like the idea of just turning up in a village, finding a nice taverna, buying some locally made food and doing some local walks. Part of this travel is to find local accommodation on spec. Does anybody have any experience of this type of travel in the mountain villages? Would you think there would always be a reasonable place to get a bed for a night or two in most villages?

For other villages than those mentioned you will probably have to turn up and see what you find.

Staying in a village you will certainly come close to experiencing their everyday way of life, and most likely also make some good friends.

I am happy if my pictures can be to any help. The villages is only half an hour by bus from Chora, so we do only day visits. Around, and between the villages Filoti and Chalki there are some very nice walks.

You may take a look at the board in the port, showing names and phone-numbers to various accomodations in different parts of Naxos.

can you tell us about the bus routes, times of travel between the mountain villages? would it be do-able to travel to several villages in a day by bus? and then back to Naxos town?

You find the time table for the buses here : naxosdestinations.com/images/…deseng.pdf

The main route for the villages is the line from Naxos town to Sagri > Chalki > Filoti > Apeiranthos, two times a day it continues to Koronos and Apollonas.

If you start by going to Apeiranthos which is high up in the mountains, you will pass the other villages, and get a good over-view. Apeiranthos is probably the most interesting village.

From Sagri it is a nice walk to the Temple of Demeter. It is not in the mountains but in very fertile fields.

We often go by the bus to Filoti and walk down to Chalki, where we catch the bus back to Naxos. You may walk either by roads down from Filoti and pass the smaller villages Damarionas and Damalas. Or you may walk up the stairs in
