Visiting Grotte Chauvet near Nimes without a car

Hi, We plan to visit the newly opened Grotte Chauvet in September 2105. Any suggestions about a day tour from a nearby town? We will be staying in Nimes without a car. Is there public transport to a central town, from where we could get a taxi? Perhaps there's a way we haven't heard about to explore the area? Robyn and Gary (Australia)

It's actually 80 km from Nimes, which is not exactly "near Nimes". I think it would be hard, if not impossible, to reach by public transportation.

It's not opening until the end of April (if then - these types of sites are famous for announcing openings and then being months late in doing so), and the "real thing" will never be open. You'll see a replica. And no, it's not anywhere Nîmes, and public transportation is very sparse in the Ardèche unless you're a local worker or schoolchild.

Rather difficult without a car.

Once in Vallon, you would also need a taxi to reach the replica,in the bush, at the top of the hill .

Look for La Pierre Agusade on maps or satelitte views to figure it out .

BUT if you really want to go, a 32 km taxi drive from Pierrelatte train station to La Pierre Agusade is a possibility.

Otherwise, bus 15 from Avignon to Vallon, during "période scolaire", is only availabe during the week ,with no service in the morning! . http://www.lesept.fr/

Rhône- Alpes buses seem slightly more convenient. Here is the summer 2014 timetable:

Summer 2015 should be similar.

From Nîmes, you would take a tgv to Valence tgv station (45 minutes) and a bus to Vallon,(2h10 one way )!!!

OR take a TER train from Nîmes to Montélimar (with a change at Avignon) to catch this very same bus.

This part of northern Gard and southern Ardèche is well worth a longer visit.Beautiful landscape, several river gorges , perched villages, many spectacular caves.... and a mediterranean climate.

Visitors to Vallon in July and August may take bus 22 from Pierrelatte train station.

Looks like Vivier is the closest--with a car. About 47 km.
