Do we need a car?

Just beginning our search for a place. We were hoping to find a central location, near beach, restaurants, and shopping . All that we could walk to and not have to rent a car. Is this possible?

Not easily. The Grand Strand stretches 30 miles.

The Grand Strand stretches more than 60 miles...from Little River to Georgetown. But..you are asking about the Central Myrtle Beach area. Yes, visitors do go without cars. Not recommended really, as there is so much to see and do in areas away from the Boardwalk (where you would want to be) For a few days vacation it will be fine, but a whole week, you will get bored with the area you are in and taxi fare adds up.

If you do go without...look at Anderson Ocean Club, Breakers, Camelot by the Sea...and a bit further down the beach but highly recommended, the Caribbean. Just to name a few.

the Breakers would be a good location you can walk to many restaurants and the boardwalk is about a 1/2 mile or so walk . You can also uber or taxi to go places further and there is a trolley that runs every 1/2 hour or so by the Breakers that goes to Broadway at the beach and back to the boardwalk up to the breakers with multiple stops . A car is nice if you want to do and see everything but if you enjoy the beach and hotel pools and don't mind walking a bit you'll be fine .

There are many, many things you can not see without a car. However, you could plan a couple of days in which you see other areas and just rent a car for those days.

If this is your first trip, I would say rent a car or drive down or up in one.. Lots of things to see, do and visit.

You really need a car. There are better choices for restaurants if you have a vehicle. You can also get to more of the off-beach attractions.

Take a look at Google Maps of MB. Also, once you see everything that MB and NMB has to offer, you will want a car. The above recommendations are good, but if you want something different to eat, go shopping, or enjoy the entertainment you will need a car.

You could do it without a car if you plan accordingly and find a resort within walking distances of restaurants/bars, etc. But, like many others say above - it is much better with a car - at least for a few days.

We own at St. Clements and stay a few times a year - we are near Restaurant row and a few other larger resorts - there is probably a dozen or more restaurants and bars with a 1/2 mile which we could easily walk to. There are a few shops too. I sometimes feel like on my shorter visits (4 days or less) that I should try to do that! Would save me a few hundred on a car rental!

It can be done, but it is not recommended, due to the volume of what there is to do in the area, and that the restaurants and attractions are spread out across town. There is some relative overlap, but not a lot of it.

Many people don't use a car in MB. It all depends on what you are looking to do. If you stay at The Brakers, Ocean 22, Anderson Club or The Caribbean you can easily walk to many restaurants , bars and some attractions. You will not be able to see much of what MB has to offer but you can take short Uber rides to BatB.
