Is Folley Beach worth a weeks stay? Or would Isle of Palms be better?
All depends on what you are looking for.
Folly Beach is a sort of old-fashioned, Bohemian type beach town, lots of tee shirts shops, bars and restaurants.
IOP is more upscale.
You can do the same sorts of activities from either area.
Read through the Top Questions, at the right of this page on your computer, there is a fairly good description of each of our beaches.
Each island is only about 6 miles long by half mile wide (give or take a little), so there is not much on each island. Houses, condos, restaurants and a few shops. Most things other than beach time (plantations, historic sites, movies, shopping, etc) are going to be off the island on either one of them. Folly (not folley) is less upscale, so may be a bit cheaper on rentals.
We spend a lot of time on IOP and love the beach there. Sullivan's Island, which is just a few miles away, has plenty of bars and restaurants and you will only be a short drive from all that Charleston has to offer. It is a more family oriented beach.
It really depends upon the make up of your group and what you are looking for.
IOP is a lot more upscale. It has a large gated in community, golf course. And for me the downtown area is not special. It's connected to Sullivan's island which has better bars/restaurants.
Folly is more laid back than IOP and Sullivans. There is a nice downtown area with lots of good restaurants and bars, there is a pier, and there lots of opportunities for paddle boarding, kayaking, surfing, and other outdoors activities. Rental houses, for the most part, will also be cheaper than the other two beaches mentioned.
Happy to answer any other questions too.
Also plenty of opportunities for paddle boarding, surf lessons, etc on IOP. Barrier island eco tours leave from the IOP marina, tour of deserted island.
We just spent Christmas week on Folly Beach with our adult daughters and our lab. We rented a cottage in the second row from the beach with limited views of the ocean from the front porch. We were .8 of a mile from the adorable town of Folly Beach. We were 20 minutes out of Charleston. It was fantastic! Best holiday ever. Many of the restaurants on Folly allow dogs on the patio so our pup also had a great vacation. We walked on the beach every day and spent afternoons visiting the sights around Charleston. Folly is laid back and unpretentious. There is a convenient 24 hour grocery store on the island. We don't know anything about Isle of Palms but Folly is a fun, casual beach community with a bohemian vibe.
How is the actual beach in both places? Is IOP more white sand, and Folly more brownish-gray? What about sand dunes?
Neither place has "white" sand of the type that you find and the Gulf of Mexico. Our sand is made mostly of millions of crushed sea shells, so has white to tan color. IOP has sand dunes, I'm sure Folly does too, altho I have not been there in years.
Frjb, would you please share more information about your rental? Is there a link I could use? Thank you
