Suggestions for the best steak in Pittsburgh?

My son goes to school at Duquesne and will be celebrating his 21st birthday next month. My husband and I want to make it special by taking he and his girlfriend for an exceptional steak dinner. Morton's? Ruth's Chris? Pittsburgh Steak? Which is the best? Is Morton's ridiculously expensive?

Morton's and Ruth's Chris are probably your best option. Pittsburgh Steak is a decent restaurant with nice meat, but the wood paneled walls and brass fixturing feel so...1970s. I don't think it would be impressive to 21 year olds.

Are you hooked on the idea of steak? There are some really cool, hip restaurants in Pittsburgh that I could suggest that aren't necessarily steak houses. Let me know if you'd like some other suggestions.

Thanks for the reply. My son really likes a good steak and since he's away at college, doesn't get a decent one too often so that's why we were leaning towards that. I'm open to suggestions though. We have visited Pittsburgh several times but have not gone to many upscale restaurants. I'd love to hear your ideas. Thanks.

Our favorite restaurant is right in town. The Carlton. My wife says it is the best Filet she has ever had. It's not a steakhouse, but they have some good options if you don't want filet and/or steak. The price isn't outrageous either. Hyde Park Steakhouse is supposed to be very good as well, although I've never been there yet. It is on the North Shore between the stadiums. Between Morton's and Ruth's Chris, I prefer Mortons. The atmosphere is much better in my opinion and I don't like the way Ruth's Chris cooks their steaks in butter.

Here are some places I really like - I threw in some casual joints in case you're here for more than one night:

Cassis: cute little place on the North Side with rotating specials. Food seems French-inspired and there is often a live pianist

Cafe du Jour: on Carson Street in the South Side. Love this place - BYOB, tiny, reservations are a MUST. Especially great to sit in the patio in the summer, FYI.

Eleven: Fancy but still hip - in the Strip District. Owned by the Big Burrito group, everything on the menu is awesome, and the pastry chef is on site. Love it.

Casbah: Another BB group, this is a Meditterranean joint in Shadyside. Their dishes never disappoint, and I've had some great steaks and chops there.

Soba: And another BB group restaurant in Shadyside, but Asian. The tuna is amazing, the Korean bbq ribs are fantastic, and you just FEEL swanky here.

Dish: Off of Carson Street in the South Side, this feels like a supertrendy place. When Jake Gyllenhall was here filming "Love and Other Drugs," he said this was his favorite restaurant. The duck is amazing if it's available.

Sonoma Grill: Great mixed grill downtown. If you're feeling adventurous, try the Chef's Table. The meat is amazing, and the sauces are divine.

Hopefully that's enough to kick start for you. LMK if you want more specifics on a place, or just more places. (I eat out a lot, hahaha.)

Andrew's Steak & Seafood has the absolute best steaks we have ever tasted. The restaurant is located in the River's Casino in Pittsburgh. It is pretty expensive though.

You might also want to check out August Henry's on Penn Avenue, right across the street from Sonoma Grille. We ate there last Saturday after the Mannheim Steamroller concert, and both hubby and I had the "Land and Sea" - filet and crabcake. The filet was awesome! Cooked just the way we both wanted it, and it melted in your mouth. They also have other types of steak, as well as chicken and seafood.

Between Morton's and Ruth's Chris I prefer Ruth's Chris. Price isn't a factor as they are about equally expensive.

I don't like the seasonings on Morton's steaks and I find the servers to be too pretentious for my taste. I also think Ruth's Chris has better side dishes, and since these are designed to be large enough for several people, deciding on which to order together with your dining companions is sort of fun.

A 21 year old might like to see the wine lockers at Morton's, though. Frequent customers store favorite wines in private lockers. Local sports figures, celebrities and businessman take advantage of this opportunity so your son might have fun viewing the name plates on the lockers.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your special dinner, where ever you decide to go!
