accomodations for 4

Planning to visit early August, dates still tbd. Likely meeting my sister and her bf from DC. Are there any accomodations anyone might recommend for either adjoining rooms, or suite-type accomodations? Have been looking for some short-term type rentals. We are all in our 30s and from urban areas and like proximity to good dining, shopping, and interesting sights. Somewhat familiar with the area, came to the suburbs for 35 years visiting relatives, now it's time to check out the sights. Thanks!

I like Residence Inns and there is one near Oakland (close to the university district):

You might want to consider where you plan to go before making the decision where to stay. Are the attractions you are interested in downtown? Then stay downtown (more expensive rates and you will pay for parking). Oakland is a good option, Greentree hotels generally have shuttles that take you downtown. If you plan to hit more spread out attractions, then the Waterfront or Robinson area might work, others, too.

I would offer that most hotels can probably accomodate adjoining rooms and there are too many "suite" style hotels in the area to list.

Downtown....maybe Springhill Suites, Hampton Inn and Suites, Holiday Inn Express Southside, Sheraton Station Square - you probably want to explore adjoining rooms, since the "suites" in most of these are studio suites, not real suites.

I am expecting to pay for overnight parking in the city center (knowing it won't be $55/night as it can be in Chicago!), but wondering if there are any city owned or privately-owned garages that offer more competitive rates on overnight parking, and are secured as well. Thanks. Planning to come into town July 14-17...haven't done a search yet, but hoping there are things going on at that time.

Not anywhere near the pricing you find in Chicago:

There is a brand new Residence Inn across from the stadiums (right beside the Spring Hill Suites). They have a 2 bedroom suite which has a bedroom with a king bed, a bedroom with a queen bed and a shared living room/dining area. We have not stayed at this particular one (only waited in the lobby); but have stayed at the one in State College, PA with this particular suite setup. It was nice because you had your private sleeping areas and baths, but could sit in the living area and dine at the kitchen area to socialize with each other. It's not cheap, but if you split the cost it's not bad.
