What to do? Going to Bend in Jan - Don't do winter sports.

Arriving in Bend Jan 19 for a few days. Like hiking but don't do winter sports. Are there still trails to hike at this time? What is weather like? Other ideas for activities, indoors or out? Can we get by with a gore-tex lightly insulated jacket + fleece under? Going to SFO after, and don't want to pack a bunch of thick down. Thanks for any ideas!

Much to do and to see, explore, in the Bend area. We've gone many times for a week at a time, to relax and experience its offerings (even w/o skiing). Here is a descriptive website. Layers of light clothing, including sweater and light insulated jacket should do OK. The Bay Area can be cold and damp. Or sunny.

PS I suggest gloves and, for your car, ice scraper. Not just for Bend, you have a long, cold, way to go.

Trails will be covered in snow, but rent some snowshoes and you are set!

As for clothing, layers will work fine. I don't even own a heavy parka and we do a lot of snow sports. We do layers all year long, adjusting of course;)

Check out the High Desert Museum just south of Bend. It is excellent!

Agree that the bay area can still be chilly this time of year.

Thanks -- we are flying in and out of the Redmond airport, so hoping that won't be so bad. Been to SF many times now, and strangely, prefer it in winter. Flowers bloom and everything turns green with the rain. In contrast to back here in the gray, damp, freezing cold midwest. A monochrome landscape except for the winter sunsets...

Thanks Mtngrl - the museum is definitely on my list. Snowshoes maybe not so much, but will consider if sunny.

You are arriving during an unusually wet time! I notice you are arriving today, but YES you will be able to find places to walk and hike. Most of the snow in town was "rained away" last night, but there is still (heavy, wet) snow higher up on the mountains.

In town I suggest the Deschutes River trail loop - start at the Old Mill District and walk upstream, pavement will give way to dirt trail. Another in-town option is the trail from First Street Rapids park to Archie Briggs Canyon. It's four miles from the car to the gate at the other end of the trail. Shevlin Park is also lovely. You can download trail maps for all of these from Bend Parks & Rec. bendparksandrec.org/Parks__Trails/trail_List/

If you decide to rent snowshoes try Mountain Supply - they are located between downtown and the Old Mill on Colorado. You will need a "Sno Park" permit and they can tell you which trails are in good shape. There's an avalanche warning today so please be careful.

+1 for the High Desert Museum http://www.highdesertmuseum.org/ in Bend, Oregon. The Old Mill shopping district http://www.theoldmill.com/ should keep you entertained for a while, and you might also consider checking out the Tower Theater located in Downtown Bend http://www.towertheatre.org/ The City of Bend, Oregon website also has some great information on the town http://www.ci.bend.or.us/ as does Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bend,_Oregon . I would definitely put Smith Rock on your list... it's a beautiful, scenic stop in the Bend Oregon area, kind of like a mini Zion, and you don't need to climb iit to enjoy it! Visit: http://www.smithrock.com/ . Dress for cool weather, winter is late, but has finally arrived. I hope you enjoy Bend Oregon... it's a special place.

One thing to consider for the High Desert Museum - tomorrow (Saturday 1/21) is one of their "Free Family Days". That may or may not be appealing to you, depending on how you feel about crowds. It's a great museum. Love the porcupines!
